Toby:
Once I graduated college, I could have broken all contact- it wouldn’t have been hard at all. I was moving a couple of hours for my first big job, and I could have just left the group chat. The guys would have understood.
But I didn’t- I still stayed best friends with all five of these guys that I’d met freshmen year when we landed in the same dorm. And now- now I was playing strip poker like I was still that same college student. I wasn’t going to be losing my shirt in the middle of some frat basement on campus- I was sitting in the living room of our luxury suite which seemed too bright all of a sudden.
“C’mon Toby, let’s see that chest again stud.”
“You already saw much more than just me shirtless this week.”
“So now you see why we want more!”
Catcalls were going around as Conner brought over a bag of chips to replenish the dwindling snacks. Standing up, I pulled my shirt over my head, which left just two guys ready to join the club. They both looked antsy, but for different reasons. Jess was still the guy that ended up naked at parties with some vague lie about how he’d lost his clothes. He had been the first guy to streak across campus, and after we saw the thrill on his face that night years ago, we knew it wouldn’t be the last time.
Paul on the other hand just looked antsy, as if he was possibly regretting this idea. I’m still surprised that he suggested it, but he must have been mulling it over for a while. I mean, I can’t really blame him for getting in his feelings about the diving incident. He’d been the one stripped naked even though he wasn’t participating which was just crazy. He never even tried to argue with Conner about it, but I just thought maybe he’d been hanging out with Jess for too long on this trip.
“Okay, well I guess it’s my turn to deal.”
Grabbing the cards, I dealt them quickly so that I would be able to lift my own cards. As I pulled them off the table, I felt a sense of relief knowing that I wouldn’t be a back-to-back loser. I had two eights in my hand, and there was a third turned up. Someone was going to lose an item this time, but it wasn’t going to be me.
Conner:
Oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck.
I was okay with the idea of losing my shorts- I had on a pair of black boxer briefs that wouldn’t show anything yet, but I couldn’t handle the idea of losing two out of three hands in a row. That kind of luck was dangerous. I wanted to keep the last hand’s win alive, but it wouldn’t happen again. As we laid down our cards, I cringed knowing that I had nothing but a nine as my high card. My hands were practically at my waistband now, but I’d been saved by someone’s eight.
“It’s finally my turn?”
My turn to leave?
That’s what I was thinking as Paul finally said something after a quiet few hands at the end of the table. He was standing up now, blushing at the wolf whistle that Nathan aimed his way, but he did reach down to grab his shirt. I expected him to have on about three undershirts under that polo, but as he lifted, his tanned, hairy chest was revealed inch by inch.
Paul looked good, but he was always so shy about showing off. Back in college, it took us months to figure out which team he played for since we never heard about his weekend exploits. Ryan would pick up guys at the gym regularly, and Nathan’s endurance kept the guys he brought back to his dorm moaning well into the night. Toby had a committed relationship with a guy at a college across the country, and Jess- Jess was never alone. Paul though was the enigma.
As he sat back down, the familiar white waistband was peeking over his shorts, and I remembered the first time he finally slipped up in the shared bathroom back in the dorm.
“You wear tighty whities??”
I had been stepping out of the shower stall wearing nothing but a low slung towel across my hips, and he was getting undressed to take a shower himself. He thought he’d been alone in the bathroom, and he stood there in nothing but a well-fitting pair of briefs as he grabbed his towel from his cubby.
“I, uh- I’m a creature of habit.”
And with that, he quickly ducked behind the curtain, presumably hanging his now soaked pair of briefs on the towel bar beside him.
That’s the thought I had now- my sexy friend wearing nothing but a wet, transparent pair of briefs that revealed every aspect of his anatomy. He was pulling himself out of the pool to grab a towel from Toby who was wearing his own useless pair of briefs in this fantasy. They stood there, far too close, as they dried each other off, making sure to spend extra time patting down their sizable bulges…
Jess:
“Earth to Conner; you there Conner?”
My friend had been staring off into the distance with a chip still in his raised hand, and he just blushed and grabbed the cards that he hadn’t known had been dealt to him. They were all acting so weird about a little strip poker! Paul looked mortified that he had to show his beautiful chest to everyone, and Ryan beside me had one muscular arm draped across his chest as he sat back in his chair to cover his body that shouldn’t be covered.
It's a good thing I loved each and every one of these guys because we could occasionally be so different. Finally, the one difference that separated us tonight was finally going to be leveled out- I had a shit hand.
Nathan:
Jess looked positively giddy as he sat up straight in his chair to seductively lift his gray shirt over his head. Ryan was humming that stereotypical burlesque song as the fabric revealed more of his friend’s body, and Jess was hamming it up. We’d all spent seconds pulling off our shirts before grabbing the cards to deal, but he wanted the spotlight on him.
We had all unofficially decided years ago that we were strictly friends and not hook-ups, but we all had suspicions that a few of us broke that code. I know that I hadn’t, and Jess surprisingly hadn’t either. He was equally flirty with everyone, but that was just his default. He saved his actual moves for guys outside of this room.
“Okay, I’m going to grab another round of beers. Someone else can deal for me.”
“I can.” Paul quickly grabbed the cards and began shuffling them. “I guess it’s time for the true fun to really begin now.”
