Tim and Chris quietly weighed their options for targets against each other, but no one seemed right, yet.
“But, Mom…” moaned a girl from behind them. “Why can’t I get my ears pierced? All the girls in my class already had theirs done.”
Tim and Chris turned to see a girl, who looked to be about Chris’s current age, following behind a well-dressed businesswoman in her late thirties, presumably her mother. The pair were walking towards Tim and Chris, apparently on their way to the food court.
“Mom?” the girl moaned again.
“I told you,” her mother replied, her eyes focused on her phone, “not until you start high school.”
The girl stopped walking and grumbled, “This is so unfair. You got to have your nails done. All I got was a haircut and a pair of dress shoes.”
“Come on,” her mother said, typing a text message. “Let’s have lunch before your piano lesson.”
Frowning, the girl gave in and followed her mother.
Tim and Chris exchanged a look, confirming that they were thinking the same thing. Then, they followed even further behind them.
“Maybe half of her daughter’s age,” Chris suggested.
Tim nodded and snapped a photo of the pair. In the app, he selected the mother and read her caption:
June is a 36-year-old woman. She works as a manager for an insurance company and takes good care of her appearance by exercising and styling herself fashionably. She is the wife of Tom and the mother of May, a 12-year-old girl. (Show more.)
Tim deleted the number three from her caption and allowed the app to alter her caption to better fit her new age. The edited caption now read:
June is a 6-year-old girl. She attends kindergarten and enjoys playing with dress-up dolls. She is the daughter of Tom and the sister of May, a 12-year-old girl. (Show more.)
Satisfied with the new wording, Tim set the app to allow Chris to be aware of the changes that followed. Then, he saved the woman’s caption and confirmed that the progress bar had begun to fill up before he turned his attention back to June and her daughter.
“Did you do it?” Chris asked.
“Watch her,” Tim replied, gesturing towards the pair.
For the first few seconds, there was no apparent change to the mother. Her meticulously made-up face had been designed to make her look younger, so there was little difference in her appearance as she regressed back into her 20s. It was only when she had descended into her teens that the changes became apparent. Physically, she had begun to take on more childish characteristics, her body slimming down, losing its curves. Her reducing height, dwindling away slowly at first but picking up speed, meant her business suit was becoming a terrible fit. Her feet began to wobble in her high heels as they shrank too small for them.
“Mom?” her daughter said, sounding shocked. “What’s happening to you?”
The girl who had been her mother turned and stumbled out of her shoes as she did, her purse slipping from her shoulder. To her credit, she did not freak out. She had the air of a person accustomed to maintaining her composure in any circumstance. Tim wondered how long that attitude would last as she approached her daughter’s age.
The mother’s skirt slipped down her hips as she dropped downwards through a reverse growth spurt. For a moment, she found herself in the awkward heart of puberty, looking her daughter eye-to-eye, appearing to be the girl’s twin sister. Then, she could do nothing but watch as her daughter became older than her.
The former mother’s make-up looked increasingly ridiculous as she continued her descent into childhood, like a youthful beauty pageant contestant dressing up in ill-fitting clothes, her immature body now a mockery of adulthood and fashion. Her top seemed to swallow up her skinny frame as her skirt dropped to her ankles.
“May,” she said, her voice sounding humiliatingly chirpy and childish. “We… we need to get help. Quickly, let’s…” She searched for a plan, seemingly confident that a good idea would come to her, but no words arrived with a solution. This particular problem, the sudden loss of decades of her life, was beyond her practiced problem-solving skills. She just stood there, looking increasingly worried as her body decreased in size well below her own daughter, who watched in quiet fascination and wonder.
At last, just after the former mother had descended beneath the height of her daughter’s chest, her regression ceased, leaving her a 6-year-old girl, wearing only an oversized business jacket, shirt, and empty bra, her face meticulously made-up to look absurdly fashionable.
Lifting up her hands, still lost up the length of her sleeves, she said, “I-I can fix this,” but her chirpy voice sounded far from certain.
“Wow,” her daughter said. “Look how little you are.” She half smiled as she circled the girl who had been her mother in order to appreciate the results of the regression.
With the progress bar nearly full, it was time for the former mother’s clothes to transform as well, shrinking and reshaping to fit her 6-year-old frame, changing from business attire to a girl’s pink and purple dress. Her dark stockings became white tights, while her makeup faded away and hair restyled into a twin pair of pig tails. Then, when she had been stripped of the last traces of her mature self, the phone began its increasing whine, signaling the approaching end of the transformation.
When the sound became almost deafening, the phone let out a blinding flash of light, stunning everyone for a moment. Then, after their senses and minds cleared, a new reality was apparent to the girls.
“June,” said the older girl. “Quit fooling around. We’ve got to meet Dad in the food court.”
“B-but, May,” the girl replied as her big sister took her by the hand. “Can’t we go back to the toy store first? Please?”
“No,” May replied, dragging her little sister forward. “I just told you. You’ve got enough dolls already. Besides, Dad’s going to worry if we’re late.
“B-but…” the little girl stammered. “No fair. You got new shoes. I wanna get something new too.”
“We both got haircuts. That’s something.”
“I can’t play with a haircut,” little June grumbled as she let herself be dragged along, seemingly surrendering to the unfairness of life as a young girl.
The two girls entered the food court and disappeared into the late lunch crowd.
“Wow,” Chris said. “Did you see that?”
Tim smiled and replied,”I did.”
“That was perfect,” Chris said. “I mean, she was so annoyed to have to take orders from her own daughter. It’s what she deserves, right? So damn funny.” He chuckled gleefully at the situation for a while as Tim began scanning around for their next target.
