Dayna turned back and went downstairs, determined to find the source of the sound. She looked out the windows but saw nothing but an empty street. Still, the bells grew louder. Then, she heard a soft thud. Followed by what sounded like footsteps.
“No,” she said aloud, “It can’t be…”
She quickly made her way back to her blanket and pretended to be asleep. If Santa was really about to come down her chimney, she couldn’t be awake. She closed her eyes tight and tried to slow her breathing as she heard another thud come from the fireplace.
“Ho, ho, ho,” a jolly voice boomed. “What do we have here?”
