if I hadn't read the manga about it yesterday, I also would have honestly missed it as well! But it also explains the money (having re watched the episode a few times). He never expected the girls to decipher it so fast, so when the money went missing he didn't know who to blame. He thought Gettan stole and stashed it which is why he went to dig it up. But since he found nothing, he assumed the girls would be furious. That is why at the end of the episode he said he was leaving for the winter, hoping they would forgive everything when he returned in spring

Cid actually did write that letter to them, you see him quickly scribble something before he tares the page out. The anime just did a rough job of showing it. They translated it correctly, but what he didn't expect was for them to translate it so quickly
