Gajeel going "protecting the girl I fell for" was absolutely huge just because we barely ever see romance upfront in Fairy Tail with the main cast. It's been hinted at several times with like every ship and more directly been seen with character motivations like Jellal and Erza but nothing as upfront as "I love you". It is absolutely crazy, Gajevy definitely had the most progression

Honestly, the amount of stupid Mest is this episode almost makes him unredeemable. Even if August had for some reason been killed here, did he really think the NATION DESTROYER BRANDISH would have allowed him to walk the fuck away from it? Dumb...just a dummy. Between this, and the weird Wendy stuff, he is probably my least favorite character of the entire series, which is a shame, because he has cool magic, and sometimes I think Mashima just needed a scapegoat, and wrote Mest in LMAO
