It was definitely the dark humor and there was no malice behind it. I honestly always though Tosen might be a mix of black and Asian because of his design but most of the time shows never really specify unless you're Chad

Dude, I was just about to reach through the screen and smack you for that 'he's black' comment. I'm black. Although I've always wondered why people consider dark-skinned characters in anime black, Hispanic, etc. without them explicitly being stated as such. Chad, I get since he is Japanese Mexican. But characters like Yoruichi and Kaname aren't. And I get dark-skinned Asians exist. But it just doesn't sit well with me.
