In the manga, back when Kurotsuchi was explaining to Ichigo about his broken bankai, it was explained that Renji's bankai being destroyed by Byakuya more or less ruined his bankai. Same with Ikkaku's against the arrancar. That's why Renji's bankai's been a joke ever since. It was broken and it's been a shell of itself this whole time.

did you notice how oetsu said ichigo hasn't fought with an asauchi this entire time? Remember when he first got his soul reaper powers his zanpakuto just appeared out of nothing.
