I know yall have already finished the season but Raava is the light spirit and Vaatu is the dark spirit. And that comment about the Avatars curse is so true. Think of it this way, Wan PERMANENTLY upset the balance of the world when he split apart Raava and Vaatu, so the avatars job is to constantly make up for that mistake by keeping balance and finding off evil.
