One of the problems that Brotherhood did here is that it skipped the Youswell coal mining events with Yoki which is why it was forced to condense the events into a flashback in this episode. It was an actual episode in the 2003 anime.

By the way Johnny & Chris, You should consider reacting to an OVA special episode for this series. 1 episode that gives backstory for Roy and Hughes aka Leorio in the ishval war. It’s a pretty dark and interesting backstory. I suggest watching it’s worth it https://animekisa.tv/fullmetal-alchemist-brotherhood-specials-dubbed-episode-4
