It was at the start of the series so you probably don't remember, but Alphonse was mentioned to be the better fighter and alchemist between the brothers so its no wonder he can hold his own against Pride and Kimblee with the stone.

Remember alphones basically has an immortal body that doesnt get tired and its also strong as fuck. When he really committs to going all out he can turn the fuck up. (especially running on soul power hes got nothing limiting him) Early in the series Ed even said he never stands a chance when sparring against Al, and that was BEFORE Al could use circle free transmutation.

Alphonse goes and outsmarts them both --setting up Dr. Marcoh and Heinkel downwind so Pride couldn’t smell them. That’s when he gave Marcoh the stone who used it to heal Heinkel aka Lion Chimera, who then killed Kimblee. Pretty smart tactic
