As a former high school coach, I can tell you that I told the team captain what we need to do privately all the time so he could tell everyone to do it. Kids will run through a wall for a team captain they respect, and the captain can go off on them while they're on the floor. Even a super well respected coach doesn't command the same respect as a team captain that everyone respects.
