I mean it was literally always getting worse as they went deeper. Thats one of the main themes, the deeper into the abyss you go, the more horrible things that await you. The abyss is both an environment where man is not the apex predator, and a corrupting force on the psyche/body. And the deeper you go, the worse it is on both fronts. The pacing/escalation of this series is really really good. I think the reason so many people think it would be a great video game, is each layer is basically like a new location where the threat level/potential rewards increases. But I agree in the sense the 4th layer is where it becomes way too much for them to handle.

This episode is an eye opener that it wasn't going to be that easy and this episode signifies the turning point in the story where its gonna keep getting worse
