musashi

How do rich people get rich? They don't care about gold the way poor people do, that's true. But they look at money as a way to get things done and you can never have enough money to do the things you want done. Rowan can play liberally with his money for a time but he should have seen the way his parents used money and intuitively understood their values.

musashi

He should have told the guildmaster "no" when she asked him to roll over in the fight. It's stupid to ask someone to go easy on an aggressor when it's clear the aggressor won't do the same. Maybe the guildmaster is sweet on Killian and is just hiding it well.

Marko

Definitely, he's just being an asshole. But I think I'll try to come up with at least some kind of fallout from trying and adding it in later, I appreciate the feedback!

Yeah i agree, Killian shouldnt be killed. That makes sense. The main thing i think Rowan would be be getting Killian back for is trying to after even more money, for the core and the extra they made up about healing potions. What happened on the trail was over with but Killian tried to get a second helping. Just like their successful extortion, Rowan successfully hiding the core was his own victory. But after all that they tried to get another 500 shamelessly.

Marko

Yeah, I get your point. The reasoning for not killing him was because of the upcoming surge. Litwick doesn't have Silver-ranks to throw around, so Killian gets some leeway because he's a genuine asset to the city. Also, he does have a point in wanting a cut, I think it's mentioned during an earlier chapter but they did have every intention of finishing that quest. That cost them a day in the Wilds, and the cut was to 'compensate' them for it. Killian wasn't going to actually kill him or anyone else in the group, he was just trying to game it out, milking for benefits. He assumes that Rowan has some kind of backing and doesn't want an angry mage sent after him, and because he knew he was loaded, this was basically him trying to get Rowan to pay him to fuck off.

Thaabit Rivertree

I suppose that may be the case but it has nothing to do with needing the money and everything to do with respect and just retribution. The fact is, for most people, 500 gold IS a lot of money and throwing money around like its worthless or letting someone take it off you forcibly without doing anything is not only inviting others to do the same, it says you lack self respect or sound guiding principles in how you use your money. This isnt a situation where the mc's powerless and it's the smarter move, nor is it where the mc is overwhelmingly powerful and giving up some money would be gracious. The mc doesnt have the ability to prevent his wealth from being stolen, apparently. The guy legitimately is a con man trying to lie, steal and extort so it doesnt make sense for the mc to fight him and win but not punish the guy. Thanks for the response. Im enjoying it.

Marko

I've been getting this a bit, so I think I might need to do some cleaning up in the earlier chapters while editing, but Rowan really doesn't care about gold. He comes from so much wealth that it's almost meaningless to him. The Vault has more gold than the entire region inside it, but that's only because it's not a valid currency at greater levels of power. There are mages that can warp reality out there, and making it isn't that much of a problem. It's mostly favors, rare resources and things like that. Still, I appreciate the feedback and the support! The story is still a work in progress and my first real attempt at writing, so there's bound to be a few hiccups!

Thaabit Rivertree

What a waste, he could have accused Killian of extorting his team and demanded 500 gold back, that way fighting wouldnt be a waste of time, and Killian would have to pay him back for his shameless attempt at theft. Also, I hope he cuts off one of Killians arms (assuming it can be healed back, eventually), or embarrasses him totally. Guy deserves it.
