Marko

Yeah, I think you might be right. I'll work this over once I'm re-editing. Thanks for the feedback!

Rowan was so profligate with his wealth before. Now is the time to give the healer fifty rare health potions and some armor and a dagger or two, mundane weapons to the guild, donate a few hundred more and mana potions as well to the guild. Anonymously or from a "hidden master". tftc

Marko

Yeah, emphasizing that seems like the smart move. Thanks for the feedback by the way, it really helps!

Tauwetter

So basically the goblins are building defenses, and warchief is here to make sure they get built. When the rest of the tribe arrives, goblins will continually harrass the town, raiding farms, lumber camps, and trade caravans. The amount of goblins would make adventuring a much more dangerous occupation, essentially driving the town into ruin in a few months. You could have the guild mistress tell a cautionary tale about a town that fell that way, make it less abstract. Emphasise that the goblins are still building and every day they get more entrenched.

Marko

You make some very good points that I am going to shamelessly steal once I'm re-editing things. But yeah, it's mostly a combination of points 1 and 2. The goblins that are there now aren't the bulk of their forces, and if they're allowed to settle dealing with them becomes a much larger problem. In essence, their plan is to cut off the head before the body gets there.

Tauwetter

There are plausible scenarios where a preemtive attack is the right course of action. But a defensive advantage is immense, especially when humans have time to prepare: traps, ammunition, sabotaging supplies, luring in predators... even in the current war in ukraine, well dug trenches are as important as artillery shells! You also underestimate the amount of difference coordination, communication and tactics make in large-scale battle. A bunch of adventurers do not make an effective force in such a scenario. I see four reasons (or a combination of those) that would promt the current course of action: 1) There are significant reinforcements on the way, including a lot of hobgoblins and shamans 2) goblins would establish a "town" and then increase their population and ranks exponentially before marching on Litwick (keep in mind that the tribe would need to be fed and contend with all the other dangers of the wild) 3) longer goblin infestation destroys all resources around, making the town economically untennable 4) goblins have a racial trait that give small but stacking bonuses for each goblin nearby (I've read that in some other book). Additionally, such an attack would not be a frontal assault. I assume goblins are less intelligent, less strategic, and less disciplined than humans. To use the adventurers effectively, you would either send out teams individually, approaching the enemy from different directions to attack at a signal or do at least some training in bigger groups, including establishing a chain of command, practicing simple maneuvers etc. Or you would try to bait out groups of goblins, setting an ambush and traps. Or you would try a targeted assassination or sabotage. Humans win by beeing smarter!

Marko

Yeah, I get what you're saying. My mindset when writing it was that they're attempting to take out the leadership, which is only possible if they go at them now instead of waiting for more goblins to arrive. If they win, that changes the tribe from a Gold-rank threat to something much more manageable. I think I might need to add some things in earlier chapters to really sell the stakes though. And thanks for the feedback!

Tauwetter

I am unsure if this is what a reasonable commander would do. Connventional wisdom is that you need 3 to 1 odds when attacking an entrenched enemy. I had the impression that the goblins are amassing the grunts for an assault on the town, which should have (enchanted) walls, siege engines, traps, and healers. Digging in would make much more sense, even if that means fighting thousands more low level goblins. The only reason to go on the offensive, imho, is if the goblins establish their tribe without attacking the town, but would continually raid resources, trade caravans etc. I doubt goblins are capable of advanced guerilla tactic, adventurers would be much better at those. The greatest strength of humans is planning and teamwork, both advantages a frontal assault like that is squandering.

Marko

Thanks for the spot!

Carolyne

... sharp-eyed woman ... They were led by a lithe, sharp-eyes woman that exuded a quiet confidence. And Rowan was pretty sure it wasn’t a bluff.

Stephen Pearson

Thanks for the chapter! :-)
