The Island of Yashima, the most peculiar place in the country.
While it wasn’t the only place where furred people existed, it was the one area where experimentation had gone quite wrong and created a situation which involved monstrous creatures that would usually kill, absorb and mimic normal living beings.
In this world where the government’s funds didn’t reach that far and where just one side experienced prosperity and another didn’t, I was a mere teacher. I was fresh meat for the scary monsters lurking about and, while this should be a good reason to not be there to begin with, you could say that… something scarier brought me here.
Yes, this wasn’t any sort of Isekai bullshit. I had been hired by the mysterious principal of Akatsuki Academy- a school which, in truth, had little to do with a normal education-providing institution.
There was a single class through the entire building, and the group’s main exercises were… fighting, killing and destroying any sort of monsters in Yashima. Tokyo funded the place with funds to try and lessen the reliance of the local population with the Chinese mob involved in protection rackets.
The kids were around highschool years, so they were close enough to Adulthood and were handpicked for their unique skills. Some had impressive skills, but they were overall troubled by some past mistakes that weighed them down one way or another. Thus, I had been hired to be a normal History teacher, but also as a ‘therapist’ to the cast of misfits within Class 1-0.
And as of now, on this very day, I could say a single thing about this group of people.
“Your performance in the latest mission was lackluster.”
My words were met with a mixed bag of reactions, awkwardness and upset being the prominent emotions in this cast of morons.
“Let’s do a roll call and address the individual troubles where there are,” I mumbled, retrieving the list of names I had been using for two months now and my eyes soon went to the spunky tomboy of the classroom. The so-called ‘Thunder Beast’ of Yashima, Azuma Riko.
“Riko-chan, what was it about getting distracted during missions?”
The blonde cat-girl appeared sheepish. “T-To not get distracted.”
“That’s correct. Then, how come you decided to bring up a conversation about hanging out after the mission when the mission was not done just yet?”
“I was… a bit hungry,” Riko admitted. “I didn’t mean to make a mess-”
“Meaning doesn’t translate as not trying indirectly, Riko-chan,” I sharply interrupted and caused her to flinch. “Then again, you patched things up fast. Just don’t put yourself in this spot again, Riko-chan. You’re free to speak with your classmates once you’re done with this sort of stuff, ‘kay?”
She smiled a bit. “I will do my best!”
“Good, good,” I mumbled quietly, looking at the next case and… I glanced up to a cool looking feline boy that was doing his hardest to appear quite the chill shounen protagonist. “‘Seven’, how do you feel about that failed stunt?”
The smug look on Egusu Sefumi vanished as I brought that big mistake up. The fire-specialist was definitely not proud of what happened in the mission since he tripped mid-action and caused a bit of an inferno that took a while to put down. The damage was, obviously, paid by the school.
“I will not, teach.”
“I hope you got the lesson from that mess: do not play cool if the floor is slippery,” I argued flatly, causing him to shrug and go back to play with his pack of smokes.
Next up was-
“Sensei!” The next student on the list intercepted me as I turned to look at a red-haired fox girl with a bit of a weight issue- and yes, it was an issue considering she had plenty of troubles with tight spots as a long-ranged weapon specialist. “You have to come out clean! A-Are you having an illicit affair with my sister?!”
The class froze up entirely at that wild accusation, with many alternating quizzical looks between me and the student that ‘called me out’. I glanced flatly at the girl that was Kasuga Misuzu, the younger sister of my colleague Kasuga Yukimochi.
“I hope you understand the amount of detention that sort of accusation is going to raise, young miss.”
She shuddered, but her defiant look was hardly deterred from glaring at me.
“Well?! Did you or did you not hang out a lot with Yukimochi-nee after work?!”
“I sure did, in the duty of teacher and her as the duty of your caretaker,” I flatly rebuked, causing Misuzu to pause at this.
“Wait… what?”
“Misuzu-chan, what was the problem in this mission?”
Her mouth opened, and then rapidly closed. She looked hesitant and then I raised my brows at her hesitation.
“You got stuck. Twice.”
She pouted, “I-”
“Then there was the previous mission. You got stuck again. Same for all those before this one and so on,” I interrupted without any hint of mercy. “The discussion I had with her was in regard to your diet-”
Misuzu jumped up, horror dawning on her face. “Y-You told her to cut on my food?!”
“I thought I had been clear to you a few weeks ago- you need to start getting fit, missy. You have been ignoring the fact you obsess over food once you stuff your mouth with some,” I harshly remarked, causing her to frown. “None of that look, I told you this already as kindly as possible. I told you that those mistakes are eventually going to cause you trouble and yet you keep on indulging with the bad food and skip on exercise.”
“I train!”
“Not enough to burn those rolls, Misuzu!” I rebuked just as loudly. “And that’s all we will discuss for now.”
She fell back on her chair, a defeated pout bestowed on her butthurt expression. In a way, she hadn’t been 100% wrong. While the meetings started with that in mind, I admit that we did hang out for other stuff.
What can I say, she may be chubby, but Yukimochi-chan is actually a lovable nerd and geek that was into some of the shit I was into. Plus, fox-girl. That played a part in my interest in seeing where things go after a while.
Next up on the list was Mitsumine Yuu and…
“Still no progress on getting your mind on the job, Yuu-kun?”
The eye-patch wearing human-kemono hybrid shook his head. “No. Sorry, sensei.”
“It’s alright, it’s not an easy thing and you are making progress.”
The reason why I was being so soft and kind with the boy wasn’t because he was the only pseudo-human in the class, but because he had the biggest bag of crap to burden himself with.
His parents were slaughtered a few years ago, the killer left him a scar bearing its genetic makeup, giving him powers in the form of a feral form driven by a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde sort of deal.
Not pleasant to deal with that while also learning to kill living beings, may they be monsters or agitators of the terrorist kind. And yes, Yashima had terrorists.
Second to last was… Nitari Sasumi, the class president and resident shark-girl. And also one of the two that gave me no trouble.
“Sasumi, your performance was peak as usual. Good job.”
The bespectacled girl beamed. “Thanks, sensei.”
I really didn’t have anything to lament about her work. She still had issues in using her unique blood ability, but that was a can of worms that I wasn’t sure how to tackle and I was told to not pressure her about it.
Finally, the last member of the class. Tsukiyama Ginrei was a loner. Kind of like Yuu in terms of shyness, but he gave off the ‘cool and aloof’ attitude with his bulky and chad-tier appearance.
In truth, however, he could be defined as the male counterpart to Komi-san… if she was actually a dog-girl. In this case, the good boy here was a blind tall student who relied on his special guitar-like instrument and its peculiar strings.
“Ginrei… you weren’t on the mission, so I really don’t have much to say. I was told by your employer that day that you did well, so good job.”
“T-Thanks sensei.”
I nodded, taking a moment to think on what to say to cheer up the classroom after tearing into most of those there. I knew they needed a push to do things right, to improve themselves.
I couldn’t exactly play the same game as the other teachers did. I knew that some of my ‘senpai’ relied on coolness and charisma… but I couldn’t mimic that. Instead, I had already planned to use one thing I learned while speaking with the principal.
“Now that we are through with this account, I wish to make it clear to you all. You will get better, without a doubt. You all have the guts and the determination to go through this path of self-improvement and I want to make a sweet deal to give you an extra incentive on getting your mind in the game,” I explained with a serious tone, drawing the attention of the students. “I will start by saying that… this school has a summer holiday fund that has been left untouched for a few years now.”
Sasumi nodded. “It was meant to be available from the very beginning but the activities of the Makatsuhi has been quite high for some time.”
“Correct. Still, since there will be a few schools visiting Yashima and taking some of our usual responsibilities as per past agreements, you will all get a free week as usual… but I wish to use some of the funds for-”
“A trip?!” Riko interrupted, guessing straight away where I was going with my offer. “S-Sensei, where!”
Misuzu mumbled. “Probably somewhere cheap or-”
“Tokyo Disneyland.”
The fox-girl’s rebuttal perished in her throat, her red eyes wide open at what I had just uttered.
“No way…” Sasumi breathed, the shark-girl quite aware that the place had a focus on nautical attractions.
“Sensei, can we even afford it?” Sefumi asked and I grinned.
“Three years worthy of not going on regular highschool trips- that’s going to be enough. Plus… I think the principal may want to tag along.”
“Why?” Ginrei asked-
The Eldritch loli forced me on my knees, tendrils everywhere as her demonic smile widened as she held a plushie of Mickey and Donald close to my face. “Do you like Disney, Bukharin-san?”
I broke out of my PTSD-induced daydream. “Y-Yes. That’s all I can say. Enough said.”
The kids were a bit perplexed by my dreadful moment of panic, but just rolled with the idea of going to Disneyland-
“That is if you can fix your current issues within that time. And I know you can all do that. Am I right?”
“Yes sensei!!”
I smiled and…
I failed to realize how far those kids could go to actually visit Disneyland…

One chapter in and this John already got tentacle'd. That's gotta be some kinda record. I'm fairly certain that this manga got canceled so it'll be interesting to see how you play with this world. It's got a rather interesting ruleset.
