Megan was walking down the street, her eyes buried in her phone. A few steps down, a neglectful street worker had opened a sewer before marking off the area with tape and cones. He had walked off to his truck to get said materials, and Megan wasn’t paying attention. She was quickly approaching the manhole.
Upon reaching it, her foot didn’t find the pavement, and the rest of her body followed it down into the sewer.
She let out a startled yell, dropping her phone as she tried to catch herself. The purple machine went flying, splashing into the sewer water below shortly after Megan herself did.
The phone was dead. Megan was not.
The street worker had rushed back to the hole after he’d heard Megan screaming; his face appeared in the open manhole as he shouted down.
“Ma’am! Are you okay?”
Megan, wet and covered in sludge, looked up at him. She needed a moment to consider her answer. Was she hurt? Were all her body parts still attached?
“Yes!” came the answer. “Just… dirty… why’d you not tape off the hole before you opened it up?”
The street worker blushed. “I… I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m glad you’re okay. I’ll get you out.”
Megan looked around – there was no ladder at the side of the manhole, meaning she’d have to wait for the worker to put his ladder inside.
“…Fine,” she said. “But hurry! It smells down here.”
The worker’s face disappeared, and Megan was left alone. She got on all fours, intending to stand up, when she noticed something was off.
Her skin had a strange green hue. Was it the light reflecting off the muddy water, or was her skin actually discoloured?
Megan squinted her eyes as she continued to inspect her skin – it was beginning to glitter in the limited sunlight that shone through the manhole, and Megan quickly realised she was beginning to grow dark green scales over her arms.
Not only that, but her feet suddenly felt swollen and itchy, painfully chafing against the edges of the shoes that had previously been comfortably roomy.
She lifted one of her feet to inspect more closely, as she felt her feet beginning to pop the stitches around the sole, and it felt like her toes were pushing through the front of her sneakers.
Megan let out a shocked shriek and fell backwards, splashing into the water. Her shoes were bursting apart, and her long, sharp toenails had indeed torn the front of them to pieces.
The swelling began to affect other body parts, as now her jeans began to feel as tight as her now destroyed shoes had done. Her feet now free from the soles, Megan carefully bent over to remove what remained of the top half of her now monstrous-looking claws.
As she bent over to reach her left shoe, she felt something pop – it was her belt, unable to contain the increasing size of her hips.
“Watch out down there!” the worker’s voice shouted, and a ladder came rattling down briefly after. Megan stared at it in disbelief. What was she to do?
Without any further hesitation, she got up and began to climb – her long, green, clawed feet making this a rather difficult task.
“Help!” Megan shouted at the worker. “Please!”
After hearing Megan’s cry for help, the worker popped his head back into the manhole, a confused look on his face. This look quickly turned to horror as he saw the monster that was trying to crawl up out of the hole.
Her jeans were getting increasingly loose again as the stitches popped, and the hard, leathery, scaly tail that was beginning to grow from her backside was aiding in the destruction of the garment. The transformation had reached her hands, doing the same to them as it had done to her feet.
Green, scaly claws with long nails replaced her soft and dainty hands. Her muscle and girth grew at an equal rate, causing her shirt to crawl up her belly and begin to tear at the biceps. Eventually, the shirt left little to the imagination, as her boobs began to increase in size, too.
“What the fuck?” the worker shouted – Megan pressed on up the steps, taking several seconds to climb each one as her new growing tail and long feet gave her trouble.
“P-please,” Megan begged – she noticed she’d began growing in height, too, and feared soon she would no longer fit through the manhole to exit back to the world above.
It was a man-hole, after all. Not a monster-hole.
“N-no!” the worker shouted. “I don’t know what you are, but you’re not getting out of there!”
He grabbed the ladder, pushing it with all his might until it tipped over. It slammed on the other side of the manhole, and Megan lost her grip.
She fell back into the water, the remains of her shirt finally letting go. The worker quickly withdrew his ladder, moving to shove the lid back onto the manhole.
Megan would undergo the final stages of her transformation in darkness.
She continued to grow, six, seven, eight feet – her arms and legs adjusting accordingly. Her belly and chest grew, as did the muscles in her arms and legs to carry the additional weight.
Her skin was now entirely made up of scales, hard and rough. She lay on her back, allowing the transformation to complete without any further struggle – silent tears ran over her cheeks as the transformation reached her face, the scales first covering her existing skin before her skull’s bone structure began to shift.
Her jaw lengthened, getting slimmer as it got longer. Scales continued to grow on her now pale green skin as her new jaw took shape. On the inside, her human teeth fell out, quickly replacing themselves with brand new teeth – several rows of long, sharp teeth that could tear a prey apart within seconds.
Her brown eyes turned green, the pupils now two narrow slits instead of small circles in the centre of her irises. She would no longer blink the human way – reptiles don’t have eyelids, after all.
Her transformation complete, Megan got up to examine her new body – all things considered, it could’ve been a lot worse.
Sure, she’d been turned into the sewer monsters she used to hear stories about as a child – but there had to be an upside to this somehow.
There was no way she was alone down there, for example.
Instead of drowning herself in her sorrows, Megan decided to embrace her new form, and headed off into the sewer system to find others who’d fallen to the same fate.
Otherwise, she’d look for other sewer workers who were already at work; surely, they would make for a tasty meal.
