Oh, that makes more sense to me. It didnt really come off that way in the movie to me.

I feel like Kenuichio Harada (the ex-boyfriend) was mostly there as a red herring. People were expecting the Silver Samurai and all the marketing for this movie set the Silver Samurai up as the villain. Harada was the Silver Samurai in the comics. That was supposedly the set-up expectation, and then the twist would be that it wasn't the rival that was the antagonist but the friend.
