No one asked the story, but it is interesting, and never explained in the films. Barty Crouch Jr escaped from Askaban because his mother was sick and dying, and as her last wish, she convinced Barty Crouch Sr to get Barty Crouch Jr out of Askaban. She and Barty Crouch Jr consumed polyjuice potion during a visit and traded places.

Haha, OK since you asked, when Voldemort was first rising to power there were witches and wizards who were resisting him (mainly order of the phoenix but also ministry aurora's). Voldemort and the death eaters would battle and hunt down the resistance. Bellatrix along with her husband, a few other followers and Barty Jr tortured Neville's parents into insanity with the cruciatus curse. (They now reside permanently in St Mungo's mental ward) And you're correct, there was huge plot holes in the movie compared to the book. There was quite a lot of set up in the book that comes to play in Deathly Hallows. They did try their best in Deathly Hallows to make up that lost ground but not very successfully. And they did leave a lot of the story in Goblet Of Fire out aswell. It was the first movie they seriously considered extending into 2 movies, but was ultimately decided that it wouldn't be beneficial. (Which personally, I think was a lack of foresight).
