[366 Days of Monsters] Day 054/366 - Subterranean Drake
🕑 Added 2020-02-24 00:57:41 +0000 UTCAnother prolific offshoot of the Great Pressonian Chromatics, subterranean drakes (also called zogo-ba-inak by the Spine inak) are dragons that have adapted to life in the Low. In these labyrinthine tunnels, the drakes are safe; Omeria's spellcasters fear to enter their domain mostly due to the wild dokh nuzeghs who hunt within. Although vile towards those who dwell aboveground, the zogo-ba-inak share a somewhat symbiotic relationship with the other races of the Low, particularly the inak.
Less aggressive than the flying drakes, subterranean drakes instead rely on camouflage and hit-and-run tactics. They prefer to hunt in packs of three to five, as well, ambushing those who wander through the Low without knowledge of how to avoid the creatures.
Although zogo-ba-inak are nowhere near as intelligent as their chromatic ancestors, they still maintain a semblance of society. The drakes make their homes in subterranean ruins such as abandoned dwarven holds, undead-filled tombs, and cleared-out dungeons. There, they are ruled by the strongest of their pack, the Grand Drake.
The typical zogo-ba-inak clutch consists of two to four egg and a female can lay up to two clutches per year. Like the summer drakes, zogo-ba-inak have shorter lifespans than great wyrms, living no more than 200 years.

Were it a spray or an area attack, it'd probably bump it up to CR 6 since the CR calculation is supposed to account for two creatures taking average damage with the attack. For example, with it dealing an average of 36 damage, for one round (if it was recharge) it'd be an average of 72 damage. In this case, though, it's just 36 per round. And really, it's slightly weaker than CR 5 which is supposed to have an average attack bonus of +6 versus the drake's +5.

Hey Brad, great question. A CR 5 creature, on average, deals 33-38 points of damage per turn. Alternatively, if it uses its multiattack, it will deal a total of 37 damage which it can spread between three targets. :)
Looks really cool! Love the artwork and flavor. I would ask though, shouldn't the Poison Spittle be a recharge ability? Seems awfully strong if not, especially for a CR 5 creature. EDIT: Actually, after thinking about it some more, if it were to take it's multiattacks all on one creature, the damage would be roughly equivalent, and it seems like it's an either-or thing. So yeah, seems good!
