This sounds really cool! I like everything I've read so far.

Thomas Mustard

Love it so far. Not a light read, but I like much of what I see. Page 53 Poisoned section but paralyzed is used below: Poisoned The poisoned condition affects characters and NPCs differently. A paralyzed character has a disadvantage on all of its skill checks. A paralyzed NPC has a -5 penalty to all of its ratings.

DM Dave

History says otherwise on that aspect. It only took 4e five years until it crumble into dust. But unfortunately, WotC is leaving us very little option.

I feel like this is what Hasbro wants. Everybody coming up with their own system which will ultimately just fracture the entire player base. Then Hasbro/WOTC can just sit back as the creators kinda go at each other trying to gain market share with their own systems. Then once the dust as settled and all the indie creators have kinda worn themselves out Hasbro/WOTC are able to just swoop in and have a functional system with arguably the biggest fan base. I rather not see new systems that I have to try and sell to players to buy into. I hope the backlash makes wotc change their mind but after seeing multiple creators go on the new system train it just makes more and more sense what wotc is doing. They can afford to have a few years of less than stellar sales on an IP while the creators simply can't.

Endless Journeys isn't replacing 5e content either. We are still getting 5e content. While I plan on playing EJ as well I have a number of groups I run for who want to play 5e and want to play OneD&D. So EJ doesn't change the fact that I still need 5e content. That's not changing.

Roosevelt Cooper

John, not sure if you are aware but COOL is not a replacement for the 5e content we have been getting. Dave has 5e specific content that was created prior to the OGL and can still technically crank out more content every day until the OGL goes live. If the OGL went live today he has content to last until 2025. As for what happens after that? I've already asked him and he said future adventures still won't be an issue. There's just certain things he will need to take out of them so that they don't fall under the OGL but you will still be able to use them for 5e. COOL is a completely separate product and it's for people who are looking for alternatives to 5e as well as for content creators who want to continue to create content but don't want to do it under the OGL.

John Kagebein

I’m not talking about the COOL. I’m talking about the Endless Journeys System.

If you want to see “insulting”, I can share the comments I have sent to WotC and Hasbro on their various posts. I understand that this is a frustrating and painful time for all of us and want to be sensitive to someone like DM Dave whose very livelihood is being effected. I’m only here because I really enjoy Dave’s adventures. I will be very sad to lose them as a resource for my game. I would think Dave would really want to know how many people would really switch to his new system. Good businessmen want and use good, honest feedback from their customers. I’m giving mine. As described in this post, I will not play his system. And since I all the legal sources I have seen or personally consulted seem fairly universal in their opinion that these sort of vast sweeping changes are not necessary for legal protection, I was curious as to why Dave was making that big a change. If you can’t see the logic in my thought process, I apologize for my inability to make it more clear.

Roosevelt Cooper

This might be (gulp) better than 5e lol

John Kagebein

If that’s the way you want to interpret my comments, I can’t stop you. I’ve tried to make it clear that I’m trying to understand why certain choices are being made and to offer the perspective of one of his customers. I don’t know how many of Dave’s customers are like me, maybe few, maybe many. But I know I’d like to understand the perspective of my customers when making a major change to my product offering. I have spent a lot of time, money and care into this game. I am fully aware that that statement is true of all of us. But I can only speak for myself and offer my opinion. If offering my perspective, opinions and concerns, which may be different than those of others, is considered insulting, then I don’t know to proceed with a conversation.

You've been pretty insulting on this thread "you know a guy" vs Dave et al consulting (and paying) attorneys to interpret this. You don't like this system? Don't play it. Please don't come on here and tell us how much better you'd do it. Go do your own blog about how much better you are.

John Kagebein

You can have a Ball of Fire that does 8d6 damage, dex save for half. It’s only the “Fireball” name, not the mechanic that can be copyrighted.

DM Dave

Yeah, that's the biggest trouble I'm running into. Folks don't want ball of fire. They want a fire ball. That deals 8d6 fire damage. Dex save for half. :D

John Kagebein

Heck, it would be easier for me to use adventures written I. A completely system agnostic way. Just maps and room descriptions, traps, detailed adventure hooks, etc, with no reference to mechanics at all. Inserting the game mechanics I use into a scenario that has no mechanic bias is far easier than stripping and rebalancing an adventure built for one system to work with another.

John Kagebein

Well, calling a “Fireball” spell a “Ball of Fire” shouldn’t be such a big deal. Calling a “Beholder” an “Evil Eye” shouldn’t be a big deal. The game would have to be stripped of a couple dozen specific trademarked or copyrighted logos and names and all the mechanics descriptors would have to be re-written in own words rather than copy-pasted from the SRD. Beyond that, using mechanics as such that are the same as the current 5e mechanics, is completely safe and non-actionable. At least according to my friend attorney and every other attorney I’ve seen on the internet in the last 2 weeks.

DM Dave

The biggest issue I'm running into honestly is that a lot of 5e creators want to keep the names *exactly* the same. And that's super tough.

DM Dave

Trust me, if I wanted to make a different system it'd be way more different than this. lol I've built my business on 5e. I know it back forth and upside down. Even if I wanted to go do something else, I still have this Patreon and the writers to support anyways.

John Kagebein

Not looking to insult. I have a friend who is a copyright attorney and player and he explained the whole thing to me, when this first hit, including sending me that link as a good explanation. I know, everyone know a guy or heard a thing or saw an article, yada, yada and you have to follow the advice of your own legal counsel. I get that, but if he’s right and every other contract and IP lawyer out there is wrong, then it would awesome to hear his explanation of it.

DM Dave

Your assumption is incorrect (and frankly a bit insulting). And while I understand the whole "you can't copyright game mechanics" bit, my legal counsel suggests otherwise.

John Kagebein

This looks like a vastly different set of mechanics than 5e. As such, I won’t use it. I can only assume that you have been unsatisfied with the mechanics of 5e and want a different game, because there is absolutely nothing about the mechanics of 5e that is copyrighted or unusable, regardless of what WotC or Hasbro may wish. Trademarked logos, proper nouns and the exact text (not conceptual mean, but the exact order of the words they themselves typed) are the only things that would have to be changed. Can’t call a Beholder a Beholder, can’t use Elminster, can’t use “D&D”, can’t copy-paste their exact text. That’s it. So why the drastic change in the game mechanics? It’s fine if you just prefer a different game design. It may not match mine, but that’s my problem, not yours. I’ve never been into edition wars. But making it seem like this is required for legal protection is unnecessary.

Lambros Stravelakis

Thank you soooooo much!!!!!!

I'll be switching immediately. WotC has been trying to destroy my main 2 hobbies, Magic the Gathering, and now D&D. I'm sick of the corporate greed destroying games I love and want to move towards community-designed games!

Alvaro Cavalcanti

I just checked in a private window, it's public. I'm sharing it on Twitter right now. :)

Dan Gragert

Is this cool to share on my discord or is this a patron-post? I'd like to share "some hope" with my table if that's allowed. :) if not no worries.
