Embodiment of Scarlet Devil
🕑 Added 2024-04-28 16:28:05 +0000 UTCToday we're releasing the Big Box versions of the characters from Touhou 6 Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. As the first characters in the Windows series of Touhou games, these characters kicked off Touhou as we know it today.
Rumia wields the power of darkness and will always have the honor of being the very first Spell Card user. But what this? She's weak? ZUN thought it would be fun to make his first boss sound like a final boss, solidifying Rumia as the butt of jokes forever.
In Danmaku!!, Rumia wields darkness in three ways. Her two part Ability gives her a small chance to both negate someone's dodge and counter their attack. Her Spell Card "Dark Side of the Moon" inverts what "in range" means for herself and attack a bunch of enemies. Imagine her creating a donut of darkness. Delicious.
Everyone's favorite ⑨, Cirno, has always enjoyed being front and center in Touhou. In Danmaku!! she ends up being a little bit of a meme character. Her Ability invokes "Icicle Fall" on easy mode, it's really easy to dodge if you're right next to her. Cirno's Spell Card "Perfect Freeze" makes another player lose their turn, yikes! Big Box's version of Cirno is a less wonky version of the base game version, which caused a lot of confusion.
Hong Meiling, the Scarlet Devil Mansion's gatekeeper, has the Ability to manipulate Chi. Her design in Danmaku!! reflects this. Breathing in and out slowly, Meiling skips her entire turn for draw power. Her Spell Card "Extreme Color Typhoon" allows her to leap into action with a colorful attack. This defensive, reactive play style is perfect for a guard, and is one of our most popular character card mechanics.
Patchouli Knowledge, the mansion's librarian, draws her power from books and pajamas. This "Eastern style Western magician" gets a lot of draw power, but that's all she gets. She'd insist that is all she needs. If you like playing Blue in Magic the Gathering, Patchouli is your girl. Her Ability to get 3 extra cards at the start of the game is actually pretty weak, so in Big Box, Patchouli's Spell Card draws more but prevents her from playing further Action cards. This allows her to fill her hands with books but prevents her from going wombo-combo and taking all day to end her turn.
Speaking of ending turns. Izayoi Sakuya's "The World" stops other players in their tracks. It's one of the more powerful Danmaku!! Spell Cards. Her Ability allows her to get more attacks off right at the start of the game. Useful in any situation, this high-speed combo-breaker character is completely unchanged from Danmaku!! 1.0. Truly a perfect and elegant maid.
The Scarlet Devil herself, Remilia Scarlet is here to impale you on the Gungnir and there isn't much you can do about it. Remilia's charisma allows her to smugly draw cards when she avoids an attack, and her Spell Card "Spear the Gungnir" is almost guaranteed damage. Gungnir used to be a controversial Spell Card, but it gets a small passive nerf by Jizou Statue now being in the main deck, allowing opponents to face tank the guaranteed hit.
Sister of the Devil, Flandre Scarlet, is kinda like a b-side of Remilia. She trades draw power for the ability to destroy anything. Flandre bypasses Powerup loss on hit and instead destroys opponent's Items, and she's the one to make the choice. Her Spell Card, “Lævateinn”, is a big swing that hits 3 players in an AoE effect and cannot be canceled, leaving players to individually defend themselves against mass destruction.
