Agreed. Velaven's action was flawless except in the one particular that she didn't clear it with him first -- and that would have been impossible, in this situation. If she had not done that, their leader would have lost so much face for kneeling when no one else did that. He would have spent the next week fighting off challengers for his position, and many more people would have ended up hurt, if not killed. Additionally, at least some of the wolfmen would not have accepted their subservience to the Dark Lord, just on their leader's say-so. Velaven read the situation perfectly, and acted her part perfectly. If Seiji is as smart as I think he is, he'll take her aside, compliment her initiative, and lay out for her the exact terms under which she is permitted (and encouraged) to exercise such initiative in the future. With someone that competent and that confident, you can either point them in the direction you want them to go and let them go, or you can break them or kill them. But you can't micromanage them. I believe that Seiji is smart enough to know this.

I don't even have words for how much I loved this chapter. This? This is the stuff I come here for. And Seiji is such a freaking good leader! Just masterful. Both Seiji's diplomacy and your writing.

Oh my GOD I love Velaven! "Knees are a privilege." For fuck's sake, that's *PERFECT*!!! And perfectly timed, too. Requires the entire tribe to join their war leader in submitting to the Dark Lord, and simultaneously saves face for said war leader by making sure that he isn't the only one kneeling while his tribe stands. Perfectly done. But, FFS! "Knees are a privilege." FFS! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Vitruvius

He heard his calling as an actor, and then was kidnapped by Virya.

Leaf

Nah, velaven was right to act here, you’re all just predisposed against her

Aaradur

Webb always writes great ones...

Too Much Sanity May Be Madness

I find it amusing and ironic that Seiji thinks that you can't soothe with a big, bombastic speech... And then goes and does just that. Admittedly, with the cat people it wouldn't have worked because they're terrified of _him, specifically_ and there's no way to fix that by having him give a speech. But just by showing the wolf tribe that he was on their side, that he was competent, and that he was in control, I'd say that "soothing" is exactly what that speech accomplished. Except to the people it outraged (e.g. the shaman) but that can't really be helped. It's just a pity that Velaven had to ruin the effect.

nunya

God, what a speech.

Velaven keeps taking one step forward one step back. Silly elf, Seiji told you repeatedly not to act on your own.

Sleepless

Seiji clearly missed his calling as an actor. Because GOD DAYUM, that was impressive.
