Chapter 16: Between Fire and Void

His repulsors whined as they charged, then unleashed a barrage of plasma bolts into a cluster of fire demons trying to flank Valkyrie from above. The demons shrieked as they were blasted apart, their molten forms spattering across the snow.
A massive lava-beast charged toward Khan's position, its footsteps leaving puddles of melted rock. Nathaniel's HUD locked onto its core temperature signatures. "Big guy, meet concentrated plasma," he muttered, firing a sustained burst that punched clean through the creature's chest. It toppled backward, steam rising from the crater in its torso.
Two aerial demons circled Valkyrie like vultures, diving at her with claws of superheated stone. Nathaniel's targeting computer calculated their flight paths in milliseconds. Twin beams lanced out, catching both demons mid-dive and reducing them to falling ash.
"This is actually kind of therapeutic," Nathaniel said to himself as his HUD painted new targets across the battlefield.
Khan had embiggenned to twice her normal size, her massive fists smashing through demon ranks like bowling balls through pins. "Come on, you overgrown campfires! Let's dance!"
She spotted a group of half-burnt Asgardian warrior pinned behind a collapsed wall, fire demons closing in. Khan barreled through the enemy line, her enlarged form acting as a living shield. "Stay behind me!" she called to the warriors. "I've got thick skin!"
Meanwhile, Dean was having his own adventures in heroism. He spotted an Asgardian scout trapped on a crumbling bridge, fire demons climbing up from below. "Okay, Dean, just like stretching for the TV remote" he muttered, extending his arm toward the scout.
His arm wobbled, bent at weird angles, then finally managed to wrap around the scout's waist. "Got you!" Dean yanked back, pulling the warrior to safety just as the bridge collapsed into the chasm below.
"I meant to do that," Dean said to no one in particular.
Blink was in her element, blinking behind clusters of demons and slicing through them with crystalline energy blades before they even knew she was there. She'd appear, strike, and vanish in a dance of purple light and demon screams.
High above, Valkyrie watched the newcomers fight with growing amazement. These weren't gods or legendary heroes—they were just... warriors. Good ones. The kind who threw themselves into impossible fights because it was the right thing to do.
Working together, the Exiles and Valkyrie began pushing Surtur's forces back toward the massive realm gate. The demons found themselves caught between hammer and anvil—Valkyrie's divine fury from above and the Exiles' coordinated assault from below.
Blink was everywhere at once, opening portals to redirect Surtur's flame attacks away from her teammates. "Dean! I need you to share my teleportation ability with yourself—get to that realm gate!"
"On it!" Dean touched Blink's arm, and suddenly purple energy crackled around his stretched limbs. He teleported in short bursts toward the massive portal, his rubber body snapping through space in ways that shouldn't have been possible.
"What are you doing?" Nathaniel called out, still firing plasma bolts at Surtur.
"Blink and I have a plan!" Dean shouted back, reaching the realm gate's control mechanism. "Keep him busy!"
Meanwhile, Blink was working on something else entirely. She grabbed Dean’s hand. "I'm going to share your size-changing ability—I need to make really big portals!"
Khan grinned. "Go for it!"
Suddenly, Blink grew to massive proportions, her portal-generating abilities scaling with her size. She opened enormous rifts in space around the realm gate.
"What are you—" Valkyrie started to ask, even as she drove her sword deep into a gap in Surtur's armor. Divine light blazed from the wound.
"We're rewriting the gate's destination!" Dean called out, his rubber fingers dancing across crystalline controls while teleporting between different access points. "Instead of connecting to Muspelheim..."
"I'm opening portals to redirect it!" Blink finished, her enlarged form creating massive spatial rifts that began to interfere with the gate's dimensional signature.
Surtur staggered from Valkyrie's attack, golden ichor streaming from the wound. "IMPOSSIBLE! NO MORTAL BLADE CAN—" Then he noticed what was happening to his portal. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY GATEWAY?"
"I am no mere mortal!" Valkyrie twisted her blade, and Surtur roared in pain that shook the mountains. "I am Valkyrie, chooser of the slain, guardian of Asgard! And by my father's throne, I shall not yield!"
The realm gate began to flicker and spark, its destination coordinates scrambling as Blink's massive portals created dimensional interference.
"Almost got it!" Dean shouted, teleporting between demons faster than the eye could follow. "Just need to—there!"
The realm gate's energy signature shifted dramatically. Instead of opening to Muspelheim, it now led to what looked like the middle of empty space.
Surtur's flames flickered with alarm as he sensed the change. "NO! MY REALM GATE—"
"Is now a one-way ticket to nowhere!" Blink called out, maintaining her enlarged form and the massive portals disrupting the gate's stability. "Your choice, flame-boy—stay here and fight us all, or jump through and hope you can find your way back to Muspelheim from deep space!"
The Fire Giant looked around at the Exiles—Dean crackling with borrowed teleportation energy, Blink massive and controlling space itself, Khan and Nathaniel and Valkyrie all ready to continue the fight—then at his sabotaged portal home.
"CLEVER," Surtur admitted grudgingly. "YOU HAVE TRAPPED ME BETWEEN BATTLE AND BANISHMENT." His burning eyes narrowed as he calculated his options. "BUT I AM NOT FOOL ENOUGH TO BE STRANDED IN THE VOID."
The Fire Giant began backing toward the flickering gate, his demons rallying around him. "THIS VICTORY IS YOURS, MORTALS. BUT KNOW THAT SURTUR REMEMBERS... AND SURTUR WILL FIND ANOTHER WAY HOME."
"Maybe next time don't invade places with interdimensional mechanics experts!" Dean called out, still teleporting around to keep them scrambled.
"THERE IS WISDOM IN RETREAT WHEN THE BATTLEFIELD IS NO LONGER YOURS TO CONTROL," Surtur growled. "WELL, PLAYED."
The Fire Giant and his remaining demons leaped through the destabilized portal, which immediately collapsed behind them, its controls sparking and dying.
Dean teleported back to the group. Blink shrank back to normal size, her massive portals winking out of existence.
The battlefield fell quiet except for the soft whisper of falling snow. Valkyrie landed beside them, her horse's hooves striking sparks from the stone. Up close, she was even more impressive—battle-scarred armor, eyes like blue flame, and an aura of divine power that made the air itself feel heavier.
"By the hammer of Thor!" she declared, breathing hard from the battle. "I know not who ye be, but ye fight with the fury of the gods themselves! And that trick with the realm gate—'twas brilliantly done! Surtur had no choice but retreat when his own realm gate was turned against him!"
Blink wiped sweat from her brow, her portals finally closing. "We're called the Exiles. We travel between worlds, helping where we can."
"And sometimes we get in way over our heads," he added with a grin.
Khan stretched and cracked her knuckles. "But hey, we sent a Fire Giant packing. That's got to count for something."
The sky flickered like a broken TV screen. Time seemed to slow, each snowflake hanging suspended in air thick as honey.
Above them, the sun began to dim, its center turning black as if something was eating it from within.
Dean felt the Tallus grow hot against his wrist, its display flashing blood-red warnings. "Oh no—guys, we've got a problem. A big, reality-eating problem."
The Time-Eater materialized without sound or fanfare—a massive void in the shape of something that might once have been alive. It moved through the world like cancer through flesh, and wherever it touched, existence simply... wasn't anymore.
Nathaniel's targeting systems went haywire trying to lock onto something that wasn't technically there. He fired anyway, plasma bolts disappearing into the void like stones thrown into an infinite well.
"My weapons aren't even slowing it down!" he called out, backing away from the approaching nothingness.
Blink grabbed Valkyrie's armored wrist. "We have to leave. Now. There's nothing left to save here."
Valkyrie stared at the dying realm—at the golden halls being consumed, at the mountains folding into entropy, at everything she'd ever sworn to protect simply ceasing to exist. Her jaw tightened. She gave a single, sharp nod.
"Aye. Lead on."
Khan spread her embiggened arms wide, shielding Dean and Nathaniel as Blink tore open a portal back to the Observatory. "Everyone through! Move move move!"
The Exiles leaped through the portal with Valkyrie close behind. The last thing they saw before the portal sealed was Asgard's final moment—a flash of snow and golden light, then nothing.
They tumbled into the Observatory's main chamber, breathing hard. Valkyrie stood slowly, still gripping her sword, her eyes haunted.
"So," she said, looking around at the impossible architecture surrounding them, "where in the Nine Realms was that?"
Dean, still catching his breath, stood a little straighter. His voice was quieter than usual, but steady.
“Nowhere in the Nine Realms,” he said. “We’re not from your world. None of us are from the same one. We’re part of a team that... pulls survivors from dying realities.”
Valkyrie’s eyes narrowed. “Dying how?”
He met her gaze. “There’s something out there. We call it the Time-Eater. It doesn’t conquer. It doesn’t corrupt. It just... deletes. Whole timelines, gone like they never mattered. Your Asgard wasn’t the first. And it won’t be the last.”
A beat of silence. Snow still clung to her armor.
“We’re trying to stop it,” he added. “One world at a time, one fight at a time. And right now... we could really use someone who doesn't flinch at giants made of fire.”
Her expression didn’t soften, but something behind her eyes shifted.
Dean extended a hand. “You in?”
Valkyrie's lips quirked in what might have been the ghost of a smile. "Mine realm be lost, mine oaths be broken. Mayhap 'tis time to swear new ones." She looked at each of them in turn. "If ye fight to save worlds, then I shall stand with thee. 'Tis what warriors do."
Blink nodded. "Welcome to the Exiles, Valkyrie. Try not to let Dean's power demonstrations scare you off."
"Hey!" Dean protested, but he was grinning despite everything.
The Observatory's crystals pulsed, already showing them images of the next world in crisis, the next impossible mission.
Valkyrie hefted her sword. "Show me where the battle lies. I have a debt to repay."
