Chapter 12: Unaware of the Oriole behind

Jessica Jones stood motionless in the center of the abandoned textile factory, her body rigid as stone, but her eyes burned with the fury of a caged animal.
She couldn't move. Couldn't speak. Couldn't even turn her head away from the pale figure circling her like a predator savoring its prey.
Kilgrave's mind-control ability worked through micro-virus released into the air, and Jessica could feel them crawling through her lungs with every breath, invading her bloodstream, wrapping around her will like chains. The virus that had made him into a monster now held her completely.
"You feel it, don't you?" Kilgrave's voice was silk over steel, his British accent making every word sound refined and cultured, even as he spoke of atrocities. "Your body obeying me while your mind screams in protest. It's quite beautiful, really—the way you struggle against something so inevitable."
Jessica's jaw clenched involuntarily as he commanded it to. She wanted to spit in his face, to tear him apart. She had strength enough to lift a two-ton police car with no discernible effort, could punch through marble walls, but none of that mattered when her own nervous system had been turned against her.
"I've been watching you, Jessica. Learning your patterns. Your precious little apartment, your pathetic attempts at a normal life." Kilgrave stopped in front of her, close enough that she could smell his expensive cologne. "You, a woman among all women, will be mine."
He reached out and traced a finger along her cheek. Jessica's skin crawled, but her body remained perfectly still.
"Soon you'll stop fighting altogether," he continued, his voice dropping to a whisper. "You'll accept that I am master of your body, mind, and soul. We'll start simply—a smile when I ask for one. A kiss when I demand it. Then deeper commands, until there's nothing left of the defiant little hero."
The factory door exploded inward with a thunderous crash.
A figure strode through the settling dust and debris, trench coat billowing behind him like wings. His face was partially obscured by shadows, but there was something deliberate about the way he moved.
"Jesus Christ," the newcomer said, his voice carrying a mixture of disgust and amusement. "Mind-controlling women in abandoned warehouses. Looks like you fell too hard from the TARDIS, don't you think?"
Kilgrave whirled around, his concentration breaking just enough for Jessica to feel a flicker of hope. "Who dares—"
"Oh, spare me the dramatic outrage." The stranger stepped into the light, revealing a lean man with dark hair and predatory eyes. "I've been tracking you for weeks, and I've got to say, your reputation is vastly overinflated. Mind control through airborne pathogens? Please. It's pedestrian at best."
"You're making a grave mistake," Kilgrave snarled, his hands clenching into fists. "Kneel before me!"
The command hit like a physical blow. Jay's knees buckled instantly, his body betraying him as it crashed to the concrete floor. The impact sent shockwaves through his legs, but he remained upright on his knees, head bowed.
"That's more like it," Kilgrave purred, his confidence returning. He walked over and placed his foot on Jay's head, pressing down until the man was forced to support Kilgrave's weight like a human footstool. "All talk, just like the rest of them. Did you really think you could challenge me?"
Jessica's flicker of hope extinguished in an instant. The man who had come to help her was now on his knees—turned into a prop in Kilgrave's twisted performance. She tried to look away, to shut her eyes, but even that sliver of control wasn't hers to claim.
"You know what I think?" Kilgrave said, grinding his heel against Jay's skull. "I think you should stay right there and watch what I do to dear Jessica. Perhaps it will teach you about the natural order of things."
"Actually," Jay said, his voice muffled but strangely calm, "I think you should try to keep up."
His hand moved with impossible speed, producing what looked like an ordinary pen from his coat pocket. But when he pressed the tip against Kilgrave's ankle, fifty thousand volts of electricity surged through the taser.
Kilgrave's scream echoed off the warehouse walls as he convulsed, his foot slipping off Jay's head as his nervous system went haywire. Jay rolled away and came up in a crouch, the pen-taser already charging for another shot.
"Yeah... about that," he said, voice like steel under velvet. "Turns out 'Mind Shield' isn't just a cool perk name." He stepped forward and hit Kilgrave with another shock—harder. "I've been immune from the second you opened your mouth."
Jessica felt the invisible chains around her will shatter. The relief was so intense it nearly brought her to her knees, but her rage kept her upright.
Jay shocked Kilgrave again, and again, each jolt making the would-be master writhe like a landed fish. "This is for every person you've violated," Jay growled, his calm facade cracking to reveal something cold and furious beneath. "Every life you've destroyed with your pathetic need for control."
Kilgrave twisted against Jay's grip, but Jay's fingers locked around his wrist like a vice. Then it started.
Something writhed beneath Kilgrave's skin—like worms crawling through his veins, threading their way from his core toward Jay's touch. His power, alive and squirming, being pulled out of him strand by strand.
The sensation hit Jay like a rush of heat. Those same wriggling threads burrowed into him through their connected skin, carrying with them years of stolen will and commanded obedience. Each pulse brought more strength, more control flowing from Kilgrave into him.
Kilgrave tried to speak, to give one last command, but his mouth just hung open. The words wouldn't come. Where his abilities used to hum was now just... nothing. A deep, aching emptiness like someone had reached inside and scooped out his core.
Jay felt the last of it transfer over—that final wriggling thread of power settling into his bones. He looked down at Kilgrave, who stared back with hollow, stunned eyes.
"Feels different from this side, doesn't it?" Jay said quietly.
"Stop," Kilgrave gasped, his voice weak and human for the first time Jessica could remember. "Please, I'll—"
"You'll what?" Jessica's voice cut through his pleas like a blade. She stalked toward them, her superhuman strength making each footstep crack the concrete. "You'll promise to be good? You'll apologize for trying to turn me into your slave?"
Jay stood back, letting Jessica take the lead. There was something in his eyes—an understanding that this was her moment.
Jessica reached down and grabbed Kilgrave by the throat, lifting his frame off the ground with one hand. "I used to have nightmares about monsters like you," she said, her voice eerily calm. "But you know what I realized? You're not a monster. You're just a pathetic little man who never learned that 'no' means 'no.'"
She drew back her fist.
The sound of Kilgrave's nose breaking was deeply satisfying. Jessica dropped him and stepped back, letting him fall to the ground in a heap. He was breathing, but barely conscious.
"Is he...?" Jessica started to ask.
"Unconscious, not dead," Jay said, checking Kilgrave's pulse. "Though I may have done something permanent to his abilities. Think of it as a full system reset."
Jessica studied the stranger more carefully. "Who are you?"
"Someone who believes that people like him shouldn't be allowed to prey on others." Jay stood and brushed dust from his coat, he again looked at the broken Kilgrave and with a smirk said. "For now, call me The Doctor."
He pulled out a small white card and handed it to her. It was plain except for a phone number and a simple message: "For emergencies. For healing. For Meta-troubles."
"I don't understand," Jessica said.
Jay's hand briefly glowed with a soft blue light as he passed it over a cut on Jessica's arm. The pain vanished instantly, the skin knitting itself together as if it had never been broken.
"Let's just say I have weird hobbies," he said with a slight smile. "If you ever find yourself in a situation like this again, or if you know other enhanced individuals who need assistance, call that number."
"Wait," Jessica called as he turned to leave. "What happens to him?"
Jay glanced back at Kilgrave's unconscious form. "That's up to you. But I'd suggest making sure he can't hurt anyone else. His powers are gone, but the list of his victims is very long."
With that, he disappeared into the shadows as mysteriously as he'd arrived, leaving Jessica alone with a decision to make. She looked down at the card in her hand, then at Kilgrave's broken form.
The control has been shattered, and she was free again to make her own choices.
