Chapter 39: Two Month Campaign
🕑 Added 2025-04-21 11:12:06 +0000 UTCThe destination was Beidelin.
Although it was an unfamiliar place name, fortunately, Menachel did not need to worry about leading the way. Artoria kept her promise and dispatched Agravain to lead the way.
Although this gloomy man who looked older than Menachel made him feel a little uncomfortable, Menachel, just as he said, confidently handed over his freedom to the other party.
As if to persuade Menachel not to torture the more than 200 knights under her command, Artoria specially dispatched another group of foot knights to set off with Menachel. As for the mounted knights, they were led by Lanmarok to the front line.
It Is said that there are only 300 knights in the knightly order, but there are actually 1,000 knights fighting with the army. 700 soldiers are far behind the team. In the siege that may come in the future, these soldiers will be the cannon fodders.
Menachel yawned in boredom. Although it was not his first time to join the army, this long journey still made him feel very painful. Sometimes a two-month-long campaign would take more than half of the time to travel.
“Are you tired, Sir Menachel? Please mount your replacement horse if necessary.”
The endurance of horses is not very long, so a regular knight will always carry two or three war horses as backup.
Menachel looked over and saw a majestic white horse. Looking up, he saw a blond knight with a sunny smile looking at him inquiringly. Unlike Agravain whom he had just met, Menachel had a good impression of this knight on a white horse who seemed to be bathed in sunshine. He seemed to be one of the first few people who accompanied Artoria on her journey to become a king.
It was called an order of foot knights, but there were also a few traitors on horseback.
“Don’t worry, Sir Gawain.” Menachel barely managed to call out the other person’s name, his voice still lazy: “I just feel a little bored from the long journey.”
Menachel didn’t want to admit that he couldn’t ride a horse – long before the expedition, Artoria had given Menachel a warhorse. But when Menachel sat on it, the black horse, which looked extraordinary at first glance, immediately fell to its knees, and the same result occurred even after he took off his armor.
It was not until then that Menachel realized that even if he did not actively release the pressure, the pressure would still exist, and he would have to walk all his life.
“Please support us a little longer. As the commander, Sir Menachel must always stay alert.”
Are you teaching me how to do things?
Menachel raised his eyebrows. Gawain’s calm tone would not offend anyone, but Menachel wanted to find something to relieve his boredom.
But at this time, Gawain jumped off the horse, took the reins, and walked beside Menachel, leading the white horse. As if he saw that Menachel could not ride a horse, he did not invite him to ride with him. Gawain smiled at Menachel’s puzzled eyes and said, “Since you are bored, I will accompany you on the journey, Sir Menachel.”
That smile, as bright as the sun in the sky, probably perfectly fits every girl’s fantasy of a prince. Menachel, who was hiding beside the sun like a deep shadow, looked away in boredom.
As expected, Artoria attracted people with the same temperament as her. However, Menachel was not in the mood to chat now.
I don’t know what’s going on over there in Lanmarok. He probably hasn’t reached the battlefield yet… but at least he’s much closer than here. I have to put down this rebellion quickly before I can go back to see Artoria.
Gawain continued to talk, finding topics from time to time. Although he knew nothing about political competition, Menachel knew that Gawain was testing his attitude. Compared with the elders around King Arthur, Menachel, the new member, stood out.
Perhaps it was because of Menachel’s previous record of defecting from King Gwyn that he took the initiative to indirectly question Menachel’s loyalty to Artoria.
Menachel didn’t know, but he also chatted with Gawain casually. Gawain, who seemed to be immune to social phobia, didn’t care about Menachel’s attitude of killing time, and sincerely invited Menachel to go drinking with him after the war.
Of course, Menachel did not dare to accept the invitation immediately, but just said perfunctorily, “I will definitely go when I have time.”
“Oh, Sir Menachel.”
Just like the previous time he started the conversation, he started with “By the way”, as if he just remembered something. But Menachel, who was always on guard against Gawain, immediately became alert.
He guessed that Gawain was probably going to ask about King Gwyn.
As expected, Gawain showed an embarrassed smile on his face. He spoke shyly, “If you don’t want to talk about it, you can just ignore my question. It is rumored that Sir Menachel’s sword was forged with the remains of a giant dragon. Can you tell me where there is a giant dragon? I also want to forge a dragon sword.”
“Well..”
Menachel was a little dumbfounded. He didn’t know how to start for a moment. You, Gawain, had laid so much groundwork before, and Menachel had thought of so many ways to respond, but in the end you just asked where the dragon was?
Are you really afraid that I’ll be bored and come here to chat with me?
Or am I just fighting wits with the air?
Menachel looked at Gawain with a strange look. In a sense, this guy was more difficult to deal with than he had imagined.
Gawain felt a little uncomfortable under Menachel’s gaze. Perhaps he misunderstood the meaning of Menachel’s gaze and smiled embarrassedly: “If it’s inconvenient, you don’t have to say it.”
“It’s not that it’s inconvenient, it’s just that the process is a bit long.”
Gawain’s good-natured character made Menachel at a loss as to how to respond. Even when facing nobles, Menachel, who could respond rudely in the past, now hesitated and didn’t know how to start.
“That’s good. Let’s talk about it together at the celebration ceremony after we get back. It will surely be a blessing to pair it with wine."
Gawain's tone was firm, as if he was certain that he would win perfectly this time.
