Chapter 40: Reaching The City
🕑 Added 2025-04-21 11:14:28 +0000 UTCBeidelin is the largest area around Camelot. On this endless plain stands the lone fortress, Bilu City. As an important fortress bordering the fiefdom of the humble king, the strength of Bilu City’s walls is second only to the holy city of Camelot.
But at this time, the situation in Bilu City was worse than Menachel had expected.
In the pitch-black mountains, one could just barely see the soldiers stationed on the plains through the dim lights of the army camp. It was obvious that the Bilu army was not idle enough to stay outside the city and come up with some “keep the enemy out” strategy. These endless military tents were all rebels.
Menachel’s eyes narrowed slightly. The chain reaction caused by the quick action of killing all the nobles in Camelot was more serious than he had imagined. But his eyes quickly passed over the rebel camp and fell on the fortress in front.
Under the cover of night, the Bilu City was silent, but the city walls were brightly lit. Soldiers could be vaguely seen moving back and forth on the walls. Although the noise was huge and the soldiers wandering back and forth would occasionally look out, giving the enemies outside a feeling of being under constant surveillance, it inevitably sounded a bit bluffing.
There were not many guards in Bilu City. The atmosphere on the tower was already so tense, so it was easy to imagine how depressing the atmosphere in the city was.
If calculated based on the standing military strength of the city of Camelot, it is roughly estimated that the number of rebels is more than ten times that of the defenders. If the city gate is breached, it can almost be regarded as a war of annihilation. The soldiers defending the city, including the knights among them, will not survive. It is a test of life and death for the city defenders, and the pressure is indeed overwhelming.
We must enter the city quickly, otherwise the people in the city may surrender due to excessive pressure.
Menachel made an accurate judgment, but he immediately frowned – could it be that Lanmarok’s cavalry had not yet reinforced?
“It seems that we are not late.” Gawain showed a happy expression. In his sight, all the torches on the towers of Bilu City were lit, illuminating the area near the city wall as bright as day.
“But I don’t know how Lord Lanmarok managed to bypass the enemy and enter the city.”
Gawain looked at the endless rebels and couldn’t help but sigh. Menachel glanced at Gawain lightly. He didn’t want to explain to Gawain the cause of the trouble, and he didn’t know the answer to his question just now.
Although he had a deep understanding of the current situation, it would be a bit too much to ask Menichel to think of a way out of it. Fortunately, there were professional personnel here.
Facing Menachel’s gaze, Agravain walked out of the queue and walked behind Menachel and Gawain. Gawain looked at Agravain in surprise, but Agravain lowered his eyelids and remained silent.
Menachel, who saw that the two had a special relationship, did not intend to delve into it. He was the first to speak and break the strange silence among the three people: “Sir Agravain, if you were the commander, how would you break through this blockade?”
Agravain only raised his head at this time, and he looked at Menachel with some surprise, as if he did not expect that Menachel would ask for his opinion on such an issue.
But despite his surprise, this mature young man who looked much older than his actual age still spoke: “Weaken the enemy’s strength, make them panic, and then break through the siege in one go.”
Simply put, it means to attack head-on.
Upon hearing this, Menachel raised the corner of his mouth with some interest. Agravain’s plan was quite to his liking – but Menachel also knew that he could only be an enemy of a thousand people at most, and the rebels here numbered at least ten thousand.
Gawain seemed to want to say something, but was interrupted by Menachel. He continued to ask with interest: “What are your specific ideas?”
“Here, the water sources in the Beidelin Plain are all stagnant. We can throw the bodies of animals and dead soldiers into the water to pollute the water source. There is a tributary of the river behind the Bilu City, so it will not be affected. However, we will also suffer greater losses here as we are about to store water in advance. However, as long as the enemy cannot find our camp, our losses will definitely be less than the enemy’s.”
“Sir Agravain, this is a bit too much.”
Gawain finally couldn’t help but speak up to stop him. Not only Gawain, but even Menachel’s eyelids twitched after listening to Agravain’s plan: the guy recommended by Artoria was crazier than he had imagined.
“Sir Gawain is right.” Menachel spoke up and concluded the matter, which finally made Gawain breathe a sigh of relief. Even if the king temporarily gave him the leadership of this knight group, the commander of this battle was Menachel. If Menachel agreed, Gawain would have to follow suit.
In fact, Gawain was a little confused at first about letting a knight who had just experienced one battle and had just gained some fame be the commander, but he soon discovered that the knights King Arthur could trust and mobilize were almost all like this, and Menachel was even the most famous among them.
“Sir Agravain, your expectations are too idealistic, and we can’t wait that long.” Menasheel said as he took off his armor.
Agravain did not speak, as if he was thinking about ways to improve the situation.
“Sir Menachel, do you have a solution?”
Seeing this situation, Gawain couldn’t help but ask.
“We’re raiding the camp.”
“A thousand of us?”
Gawain’s eyes widened, and he was somewhat speechless. Even if Menachel was so powerful that he could fight a thousand men alone, what would he do with the remaining nine thousand?
“So we have to wait.”
At this time, Menachel took off all his armor and handed it to Agravain.
“Let’s wait until late at night when people are most tired. The rebels must be mentally exhausted after besieging the city for so long. We can strike when they are least alert.”
Even so, the loss of this knight group would definitely not be small. But this was the only solution. Since Agravain had not thought of a solution that would satisfy both sides, Menichel could only resort to the method of death.
He actually agreed with Agravain’s core point – this was a necessary sacrifice.
“What happens after the raid?”
Gawain looked at Menachel, hoping that he would not try to completely destroy or repel the enemy.
“Of course we have to enter the city. Enter the city before the enemy can react.”
“Even so, Sir Menachel, there is still a fatal flaw.” Gawain looked at Menachel and said seriously: “What if the city gate is not opened…”
“I’ll leave it to you and Agravain. When we raid the camp, you two should bring a few more people with you and try to ride horses to negotiate as quickly as possible.”
Taking off his helmet, Menachel gave Gawain a harmless smile.
“Okay, I understand.”
As if accepting his fate, Gawain complied with the order.
Menachel nodded to Gawain, but the moment he turned his head, his eyes were gloomy.
Gawain may not have realized that the real flaw in this plan was not whether the city gate could be successfully opened, but that the success of the plan itself would not change the overall situation.
Even if they entered Bilu with full force, the reinforcement of one thousand people would not bring about a decisive change in the situation. But even so, Menachel had to take the gamble, using one thousand people and his own life as chips to let the defenders in Bilu know that reinforcements were coming soon.
