Valentine actually killed the real Michael Wayland and his son. Jace is Jonathan Christopher Herondale, Son of Stephen Herondale. Jonathan same name only Morganstern , which is what Valentine named them both. He kept them both hidden until they were 10, then sent Jonathon to Edom and Jace to the Lightwoods, so he could hide and rebuild the circle. He kept Jace from knowing about Jonathan...but in the books Jonathan knew about Jace.
