Well, the plane crash really was from the release of the energy. Dharma is like, you cant leave something like this to a computer, they can always glitch out. So, make people press it, and then this allows to do a social experiment. Whatever. Fortunately for you, it's gone.

I have not yet seen your reaction to 2x24, nor do I remember how much exactly was revealed about the Swan in that episode, but - it is an electromagnetic station, and pressing the button basically discharges the piled up electromagnetic energy. The writers have actually confirmed that if the button isn't pushed, or the fail safe key isn't turned - that really would have made such a huge explosion, the whole world would be dead.
