Just to clarify: 1. They initially went to the hatch because they were looking for something man made to figure out where they were in time, that's it. 2. Daniel says what happened, happened, however he changed his mind with Desmond because the rules don't apply to him because he is special... which previous episodes have made clear too. He also looked in the journal right before, so you can deduce he looked at the page that said: "If anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume will be my Constant"
