We settled on a bench nearby, the low hum of electricity washing over us like a reminder… This wasn’t a dream.
I smiled and looked towards Noah as I cradled our baby girl in my arms. “First things first, Noah, we need to welcome our daughter Lyra into this world.”
Something told me she understood what was happening. Maybe it was because I had just spoken to the soul within her, or maybe I just needed to believe it.
He looked down at Lyra in my arms, then leaned over and kissed her forehead.
"Welcome to the family, Lyra. I’m happy that both of you came out of this pregnancy healthy."
I couldn’t help but lean into Noah as he casually pulled me closer with one arm, holding me against his side. I had already kissed my miracle more times than I could count, overwhelmed by what she meant to me.
“Lyra…” I repeated her name softly, eyes fixed on her tiny face. Then, her beautiful sapphire eyes fluttered open, meeting my gaze.
She looked almost identical to me besides the color of her eyes, but it was perfect because it matched Noah.
I brought my finger to her face and gently tapped her nose. She giggled, swinging her arms and making the cutest little baby noises.
My heart overflowed as I watched my child. I made this little life, and somehow, even after leaping between worlds, all I cared about was making her laugh.
After a good thirty minutes where Noah just sat quietly as I entertained Lyra, I finally spoke about our current situation.
“Now,” I said, glancing at him sideways. “Let me explain what the hell just happened to us.”
I told him everything… the dream, the silver field, and the glowing soul. I explained how she called me “Mom” and how she was the last remnant of the original Seraphina, now reborn inside Lyra. She had seen everything. I made sure to emphasize that part so Noah would truly understand.
His eyes widened slightly as the truth settled in. Then… there was the information about her wish and the gift I received.
“Right before she disappeared, she hugged me… and then began to shrink until she became this very child. When I woke up, Lyra was already here, resting peacefully in my arms.” I couldn’t have been more grateful. “Maybe the god or entity that helped her made sure the birth happened without pain or complication.”
I looked up at him with a complicated face.
“How was I? Did I… look like I was suffering?”
Noah shook his head.
“No… not at all. You looked calm, focused. There were a few sounds, but nothing that suggested pain. It was like… you were in a trance, and nothing any of us did could bring you out of it.”
I stared off into the distance in disbelief. “How in the world did I give birth without feeling any of it?”
He chuckled under his breath. “Maybe… that divine entity you mentioned before really did assist you.”
Of course that had to be the case, and also this body wasn’t normal to begin with. It had a divine light inside of it that could very well be linked to the existence of a true saintess.
Am I truly a saintess now, or is there more to it?
Well… I guess there's no reason to worry about it right now with more pressing matters.
“Great! We’ve officially had divine intervention childbirth. That’s one hell of a story I can tell Lyra when she grows up.”
“We’re going to have to document her life from now on,” Noah said, completely reading me like a book.
“Oh, definitely,” I smirked. “One day she’ll ask how she was born, and I’ll say, ‘Oh sweetie, well… Mommy crossed dimensions and didn’t feel a thing, thanks to a miracle from a god and the reincarnation of a tragic soul with a noble heart.’”
We both laughed as Lyra kept giggling at our interactions and staring at all the bright lights around us.
She was so small in my arms, bundled snugly in the blanket Noah had wrapped around us during the chaos of our otherworldly jump. A tiny tuft of hair peeked out from the top of her head, soft and wispy, the same pale silver as mine with just a hint of blue that shimmered gently beneath the city’s artificial light.
“We have the same hair,” I whispered, a smile tugging at my lips. “Her face is also very similar to my own, but she has your eyes, Noah.”
Noah leaned in close, his gaze intense enough to frighten most people. But Lyra just smiled and reached out for him.
He let her take hold of his finger, and the instant her tiny, delicate hand closed around his strong, masculine one, his features melted into something tender.
I just smiled as I watched the interaction.
The look on his face was one of quiet reverence, like he was gazing at something sacred. He held her so gently, and I found myself deeply grateful for that. She was his daughter too. It was only right that he treated her with such care.
In this era, normally daughters are looked down upon in most families and only used for a potential beneficial marriage partner. Lyra will never be raised that way, nor will she have to worry about outdated etiquette.
She will be raised like a girl from modern times, and now we're actually here.
“Doesn’t she look so cute?” I said as he held Lyra in his arms.
“Dangerously cute, she looks just like her mother, so of course I would like it.”
I sighed, wondering what Noah would do in the far future when we tried for another one and the possibility of it being a boy. But that’s years from now, something for future Seraphina to worry about.
For now, we had to figure out what to do. I’m pretty confident that I have a vague idea on how this power works. If I concentrate, I can feel Elarion.
It was weird being back. On the other hand, is this even an earth I know of? There is a real chance that this is a completely different world from what I remember.
That meant some real danger we might not be prepared for could be right around the corner.
“Noah,” I said more seriously, taking back Lyra and adjusting her in my arms. “We’re out in the open and at night. In a city I don’t recognize.”
He looked around, this time with sharper eyes. The protector in him was already awake and ready for combat.
“You said this place had dangerous things; just… what do you mean?”
“Yes, it does,” I nodded. “Guns… are what you need to be the most wary about. You don’t want to fight those with a sword, unless you can block the bullets.”
His eyes narrowed. “Are they powerful?”
“They can kill you from across a courtyard with just the flick of one finger.”
Noah visibly tensed.
“Then we need to leave here… right now.”
I nodded, shifting Lyra gently.
“Do you have any of those gold pouches on you?” I said, already knowing the answer.
He paused to think and then nodded. “I always carry at least one just in case.”
“Perfect. Now we just need to find a motel or an inn, something cheap and out of the way. I doubt our currency will work here, so our best option is to find someone who can trade gold for money.”
There was a sudden frown on Noah’s face. “Won’t they be suspicious?”
"Maybe... But if I say it's an heirloom or claim I inherited some buried treasure from a distant relative, they'll likely believe it."
He relaxed slightly. “Alright, let’s go with that.”
After coming to a decision, he continued to scan the area.
“Lead the way, Sera. I’ll protect you and our daughter, no matter the world we’re in."
I looked at him with a slightly annoyed look; he obviously isn't paying attention to everything.
After catching his gaze, I motioned with my head towards the ground. My feet were poking out of the gown I was currently wearing that still had drops of blood on it.
“You have no shoes or socks, Sera,” Noah said, suddenly realizing my situation. “Will we be traveling far?”
The city was still miles away, and I had no intention of walking there without shoes. There was no way I was going to scuff up my feet after taking such good care of them. Ever since becoming a girl, I’d been much more diligent about keeping my body in pristine condition.
“Quite far, plus I don’t really know where we’re even going,” I admitted, cradling Lyra closer. “See those lights in the distance?” I pointed. “That’s a city like Coldmere. We’ll need to reach it if we want any type of comfort.”
He stepped beside me, wrapping his cloak around us to give us even more warmth. The night air was quite chilly. “Then let me carry you.”
“Are you sure?” I asked, shooting him a look that said, "You better do it," even if I was smiling the whole time.
It’s not just the fact I was barefoot, but I had also just given birth.
“Of course,” he said simply.
Before I could react, he lifted me as if the weight of pregnancy was all in my head. I held Lyra, her tiny face tucked against me. Somehow, she was now sleeping through all the excitement.
Noah crouched low and then broke into a run with purpose. I’m pretty sure he set up some kind of barrier in front of us using his overpowered magic because I felt nothing.
I gave instructions as we moved.
“Alright, listen carefully. If anyone tries to interact with us… just ignore them. Don’t speak or stop. If I say kill, then do it, no hesitation.”
He nodded.
There was no way for me to know how dangerous this world might be, or if it was even the same one I came from. For all I knew, it could be a harsher version of what I once remembered. We had a daughter to protect now, and we couldn’t afford to take any chances.
“But… this world isn’t like ours. They have these things called cameras. Glass eyes all around, like unmoving spies, mounted on buildings, walls, and streets. They can see everything.”
Noah scowled. “So… they watch their people constantly?”
"Yes. They have facial recognition. Just being seen could expose us. If we act strange or show weapons, the authorities will come. Trust me; they will not react well to magic, world travelers, or a baby born mid-portal."
“Will they hurt us?” he asked with a dark expression.
“Not if we don’t give them a reason to,” I said. “But people here might be even greedier than they were in our world. If they found out about your powers, Noah, they wouldn’t ask questions. They’d try to lock us up, dissect us, or worse. I’ve seen the documentaries.”
He adjusted his grip on me slightly, voice low as we continued to make our way towards the lights.
“Then I’ll kill anyone who tries.”
I smiled. “You really are the perfect husband.”
As I settled myself once again in Noah’s arms, I happened to look back at the spot we showed up in this world. The bed was still there!
It was right in the middle of the field. “No way…” I breathed.
I stared at it for several seconds before realization dawned on me.
“The bed came with us, Noah. It traveled across worlds too. Could touching something really bring whatever you wish to another world?” I will have to test thoroughly in the future.
His eyebrows rose as he looked down at me. “So anything you’re touching comes with you?”
“Apparently,” I said. “That’s… really useful if true.”
Imagine the change I could bring to the North with a power like this at my fingertips.
We could bring back supplies, books, weapons, tools, and most importantly… technology.
This must have been what she meant… Having such ability would help us improve our odds in the upcoming war.
Noah ran effortlessly, his breathing even, barely breaking a sweat.
We only passed a few pedestrians and the occasional car as we made our way. People in this world still acted the same; no one questioned us. Even with Noah carrying me at such high speed, we were completely ignored.
“Yup,” I muttered. “It’s still the same… Even if someone saw a crime taking place, most people would just look the other way, afraid to get involved.”
After what felt like an hour of travel, though it had probably only been about twenty minutes. We reached the edge of a lonely road with a dimly lit gas station sitting beneath buzzing fluorescent lights.
“There.” I pointed. “Let’s go to that building.”
Noah shifted direction, but at the same time I grabbed his shoulder.
“Wait, stop!”
He froze, lowering us into the shadow of a tree nearby.
I looked at our clothes, his battle-worn cloak still around us, my silk gown with blood, and Noah’s cosplay-like clothing. We will probably raise all types of red flags, or they will think we're crazy.
“We can’t go in like this.” But… honestly, we have no choice.
Noah frowned. “So what do we do?”
“It’s either I go in alone and pray no one gets suspicious, or… maybe we find a pawn shop. But it’s probably too late for one of those. Most places are closed at night.”
I sighed and started pacing in the grass after Noah let me down to stretch my legs.
“If only it were daylight. I could get us some cash, clothes, or even a phone.”
That’s when I turned to glance at the gas station again… and froze.
“Oh, come on.” I shouted.
Under the sickly yellow glow of their sign, I spotted a man inside waving a gun at the cashier.
The clerk had his hands up, lips moving in silent panic. The gunman was shouting—probably demanding cash or warning him not to move. It was a textbook robbery, unfolding in real time.
I blinked a few times, staring in utter exacerbation at something like this happening just as we arrived. Is it a blessing or a curse?
"Hell yeah," I said with a grin. "My day just keeps getting better. Is divine intervention still working overtime, or did it take off early?"
Noah’s eyes followed my gaze. His body tensed the second he saw the weapon in the man’s hand.
“You see him?” I asked, while pointing at the man with a gun.
He gave a single nod with a dangerous look in his direction.
“Alright, the second he runs out… Chase him. As silently as you can and rob that bastard. Take everything he has and bring it back. I’ll stay here and keep Lyra safe.”
I watched as Noah’s eyes wavered just a bit.
“I’ll be fine, Noah, but please be fast about it.” Of course I was afraid something could happen while he was away, but what other option did we have? “That guy’s up to no good. If he threatens you, don’t hold back.”
The faintest smirk crossed his lips, an expression I had only seen a few times in the past, always just before something violent.
“As you wish, my Seraphina,” I saw a flicker of blue in his eyes as he prepared himself for the task ahead.
