Yeah, maybe in the book make bee catch them before they get there? I know theyre great and all but it does seem hard to believe they sneak by Arthur's entire army and susans scouts. When they're super observant because of enemy presence. Beyond just the weirdness of 'void blesses children so they can fight in war' vibe

John Doe

And honestly, in a middle-age comparable world with no international agreements on warfare, I would consider it to be even more immoral to allow children to participate. Back then it was normal to kill most prisoners of war. https://www.nps.gov/ande/learn/historyculture/history-legal-status-pows.htm

John Doe

The zombie plague is clearly different from Earth warfare and more similar to genocide and so of course that changes things. But can you honestly say that the Posessed King and Demon Lieutenants are much different from many past or present states on Earth? The international agreements exist for a reason, to protect both civilians and soldiers. It is not necessary to sign the agreements to follow them - but going against them is generally considered immoral. Something you seem to be completely disregarding. If two countries are at war, then even if you are not a member of either country, you can still condemn actions they take as immoral.

Manlor

How does Demons Lieutenants and mad/possessed kings interact with that? How about a zombie plague? Which part of the UN charter is that in? Which kingdoms are part of the permanent security council? 🤔

John Doe

"But isn't defensive warfare just self-defence on the group level?" Edit: 'Jus ad bellum' is the idea that a State can exercise self-defence against another State. That doesn't mean any and all individuals can. Unless soldiers are commiting crimes against the civilians, "the bottom line is that civilians who directly participate in hostilities forfeit their protection from attack under the law of armed conflict for such time as they are doing so." https://lieber.westpoint.edu/understanding-self-defense-law-armed-conflict/

John Doe

I disagree. "I will stay here with you and assist" is to me the same as enlisting them under her command. Regardless of her intentions, she is aiding them in military actions as a superior commander. Actions like these are banned for a reason, beyond just their immediate consequences. The kingdom's soldiers did not sign up for killing children, but that is what they are forced to do if they want to protect their military assets. It also means that the children forfeit all their rights as civilians if they were to lose the overall conflict.

Manlor

But she didn't enlist them. They ran off and she's trying to protect them from getting in more trouble. She believes they would sneak away again if she forced them to go back.

John Doe

Kevin from Home Alone is not a war criminal, but Bee is. "Under the Statute of the International Criminal Court, conscripting or enlisting children into armed forces or groups constitutes a war crime in both international and non-international armed conflicts (ICC Statute, Article 8(2)(b)(xxvi) and (e)(vii))." https://casebook.icrc.org/a_to_z/glossary/child-soldiers

Manlor

But isn't defensive warfare just self-defense on the group level?

John Doe

Home Alone is in its essence an act of self-defence. This is, without a doubt, an act of warfare.

Manlor

It all depends on how you present it. Home Alone was a very violent movie and the consequences of failure were possibly death. It's still a beloved kids movie. 🤷

John Doe

It is not inherently non-violent though, as Bee puts the children (as young as 3 years old if I recall correctly) at risk of being killed in action.

Manlor

I think so long as it is non-violent it should be fine. Give it an home alone style mischief feel. You could probably just rewrite the firr grenade part, and focus on the part of the kids being mostly ignored because they are underestimated.

John Doe

I'm really not a fan of this child soldier arc, I think you should seriously consider rewriting it, especially allowing them to keep gping after this. I also want to note that it is borderline violating the updated RR content guidelines for Disturbing Content by condoning child soldiers.

BigBro Bluesman

Damn I think your making them a little to smart honestly I figured you'd make there whole plan non-lethal which just makes this..behind cool lol honestly this is such a fun story! ---edit: Alright everyone's getting a little heated about the child soldier arc and I'm confused I mean isn't Bee 14? That's not exactly the age of fighting demons but you wrote it in a way that makes it more badass and heroic then child soldier..there an elite fighting force child or not I'd say let them help (like how you have it) and it'll turn out ok. You've done amazing with the world building and how this is going just makes sense.

Darko Koroshi
