Especially since they were squarely in the echelon of power where any noteworthy enemy would have unlocked their own scaling increase, like Rave and Eliana had. Remaining at base scaling meant that they would never be the favourite to win in an equally levelled 1 versus 1 ever again. His Artificial Spirits were already limited by the nature of his powers. Learning new combat techniques at the click of a button was useful, but they were also narrower in their application than many natural abilities, creating a disadvantage.
The second option, to invest in Starforger, was made equally attractive and difficult by its unique situation. Levelling it up required levelling up other Classes. That meant that John got to naturally diversify his set of powers, while still marching towards a definitive goal. As someone who liked to be prepared for all possible situations, this found agreement with John’s intuitions. The problem was, it was also resource intensive. Effectively, every level in Starforger required two Max Class Levels. Beyond that, every Perk would have an associated cost to it, like the Skill Evolution Point necessary to unlock the upgrade to Mana Chain.
It might have been smarter to delay the levelling of this Class until he had the necessary resources to really take advantage of what it offered. At the very least, avoiding a pile of Perks he had technically selected but effectively remained behind a ‘paywall’ was good policy.

Space Protector could allow him to eventually supply his own grinding barriers. Whether he would ever reach the same effectiveness as a dedicated, genius Fateweaver like Magoi was doubtful, but just a five to one time dilation to use whenever he pleased would greatly increase his grinding opportunities.
The last option was Unfound. The Class was currently sitting at level 8, and finishing it up would give John access to two more, most likely powerful Perks, an Overclock and a new Modification. Whatever Advanced Class he then picked could be a nice option as well.

The thing with Starforger is whether its conditions can be pre met. Like if level 5 requires lvl 5 Metra master and that's cool because he already leveled it. Or if it instead would ask for 6 because he already had 5. If they can't be pre met he should definitely start it sooner, if they can less of a rush. It is somewhat moot, though, since it seems like it should be an early choice based on the powers it gives. Judging by what we have seen so far, stars seem to fuel powerful but limited trump cards, which is exactly what you want when your life is on the line.
