Had he been this tense? Evidently so, considering how annoyed Gaia always got when she was ignored for several days.
John had actually noticed this, but had decided not to say anything because he had expected to be wrong. That Gaia was wrong instead was not totally surprising. She had made herself fallible to allow free will and all of that, which came with its own set of drawbacks. Drawbacks that only he, who had an intricate system overseen by her, really could experience.
That, the Gamer did not have an answer to. ‘I wonder if I’ll develop a similar enthusiasm for it down the line,’ he considered. ‘Might be a manifestation of an immortal getting bored.’
‘Not my fault she wore a Gamer attractor when we first met!’ John thought and recalled Lu Zhi’s behind, clad in tight fabric and not. ‘God, how much I want to bend her over and tease her until she begs for it,’ he thought. Quickly, he returned his attention to the windows, to get through them all.
‘I am just getting showered with goodies right now,’ John thought. ‘Not that I don’t deserve it after all of that.’
Nothing to say about that one, Gaia just seemed to want to sass him.
John withdrew the eyepatch from his inventory. It was a white thing, decorated with black and golden simple patterns to break up the monotony. The cloth felt… odd in his hands and it defied Observe with a gentle rebuke. ‘Well, if it’s meant to hold back the power of the eye, it can hardly be standard magic itself,’ he thought.
“For me?” Nia asked. Like all the other haremettes, she had waited for the windows to close. The eyepatch being meant for her was a small leap from there and he handed it over with a simple confirming word.

That was as much as John could ask for.
Nia suddenly splashed water in her face. The liquid streamed off her skin like it was a hydrophobic surface. The eyepatch, while not completely refusing the water, did not get soaked. Little pearls got loosely stuck on the surface, easily made to scatter via movements. Having confirmed the properties of her new, semi-permanent, fixture, Nia then settled down next to him. “I have to ask: any revelation you got out of the recent fight?” John asked. Taiwan sat in an awkward position in the political landscape of the mundane, but for the Abyss it was a safe haven for the Mandate’s international conduct. Whereas the communist secret police apparatus made moving as an Abyssal on the Chinese mainland a bit of a hassle, Taiwan was more western in its views on personal freedoms. Moving back and forth via Mobile Barriers would allow Abyssals to move to a zone less restrictive when it came to real space interactions.
Granted, the current proliferation of Mobile Barriers made this increasingly less necessary. The great bottleneck for the global use of Mobile Barriers for trading and warfare had been the unionization of Fateweavers into a monopoly and resource restrictions. The former had undone itself thanks to Gehnigm’s actions during the Five Day War and the latter John was currently undoing. World Gems, the most sought after component, usually could only be found in Natural Barriers that had matured for a while and even then it was a rare chance. Between those that John had brought back from a Raid at one point and the Silicate Island, Fusion was diminishing that issue.
It was a slow revolution, just a couple dozen major and hundreds of minor engines per year, but that would still push the Abyss forwards. Mobile Barrier generators did not require refuelling, only occasional maintenance to make sure all the circuits and runes were still intact.
If they could then work out how to create self-sustaining lanes, which Magnus was working on, they’d be able to avoid the mundane space for practically everything. It would divide the two sides of the world further. Not that there was a much bigger divide that could be driven between mundane and magical.
“You will need my help with that, I assume?” John asked.
“If you could kinda make it sound good to her prime minister guy, that’d be much appreciated, yeah,” Rave told him. “Then we do some manoeuvring, maybe get a plot of land in Taiwan or even the Forbidden City, and after that Lulu can come visit us easily.”
Lydia just sighed, having accepted that the Heavenly Jade Empress joining the harem as the inevitability that it was. “Must I prepare myself for further surprises compromising our current stance on reducing bloat in our circle?”
“Depends on how charming Ehtra is,” Undine said. Lydia shot the water spirit a concerned glance. The shortstack-ified slime shrugged. “It is the way of these things.”
“If Ehtra does awaken,” Delicia cautioned across the room.
“If Ehtra does awaken,” Metra echoed the sentiment in a serious tone, then continued, “she will be needing a contract to act.”
“Would you want me to extend my hand?” John asked. It had been the presumption so far that he would engage in a contract with the First of Hatred, if for no other reason than having another enemy of the Lorylim at his side. Thanks to the contract, Ehtra would be able to rise to his level, Lover’s Will or not. He wouldn’t be able to give her Perks or distribute her Stats, her being a natural Metracana and all that – unless he got a Perk to change that, like he had gotten for Metra. He had another contract slot open as well, courtesy of finishing up the Metracana Master Class sometime ago.
“Yes,” the First of Wrath answered instantly. “You are my king candidate, John, albeit not... entirely legitimate. All of my kin should serve you or at least the ones I like.”
John chuckled. “And you like Ehtra?”
“Last time I met her, she was a wonderfully abrasive cunt,” Metra answered, a nostalgic smile on her face. “She’s always been of the… dedicated sort. Kind of like Siena here used to be, but focused on select individuals or organizations, rather than a broad group of ‘men that have it good.’”
Siena acknowledged the words with a frown and nothing else. Arguing that she had reformed was beneath her (and unnecessary).
“Well, let’s hope she maintained that, then,” the Gamer said, then hummed. “I suppose I should prepare myself for the eventuality. I do have some Class Levels available, so might as well.”
“Urgh,” Momo groaned in the background, while he tapped through his screens, “can’t even tell you not to bother with this one. Allies against the Lorylim are always a good idea. Just don’t flirt with her too much!”
“Can I put her in a maid uniform though?” John joked.
“HAH!” Metra laughed out loud. “That’s something I’d love to see. She was always too disdainful for sex.”
“And you were too prideful to be a sex slave, look where you ended up,” John pushed back.
Metra hummed deeply, grinning all the while. “If you can break me in, you could do the same for her, that’s true…”
“Babababa!” Momo interrupted. “Stop exciting our Master!”
“Sure, I’ll stop exciting our Master, you do that well enough.”
Momo stared across the water, stopping the constant massage of Nia for only a few moments, before it dawned on her what she had said. Blushing intensely, the fae maid harrumphed, before returning to running oiled fingers over Nia’s back.
John, meanwhile, opened up the Class he had been looking for: Monster Girl Creator. It was the successor of Metracana Master and, if there was a place to find a Perk that would extend what he had gotten to other Metracanas, it would be there.
And there it was, immediately.
The alternatives were also quite powerful. Monster Girl Master would save him a notable chunk of mana, pushing the cost reduction of his Artificial Spirits (all of which were Metracanas by the definition of a previous Perk) from 50% to 60%. In other words, it would decrease what he currently paid in mana upkeep by 20%. Really strong stuff.
Monster Girl Polish was less powerful by comparison, but it would give several of his girls access to Stat Points that they had missed out on when they upgraded from 5 to 6 points per level. More interesting here was what it would enable as follow-ups.
For now, however, he was going to pick Integrate Old Metracanas. Even if it just applied to Ehtra, it would be well worth it.
“Might as well do Disciple next,” he announced.
Prayer was plainly useless to him – a building block for a paladin or priest build, neither of which he was interested in. Community was slightly more intriguing, considering he still had one Patron God Slot available. However, Religious Text was the most intriguing. John wasn’t interested in putting an actual religious text in there. If it was just any book with up to 25’000 words, he could throw the constitution of the Federation, alongside other laws and other commonly useful knowledge in there. Granted, it wouldn’t be quite as convenient as just looking such things up via Fusion’s corner of the internet, but it would be always available.
Given stronger competition, John would have skipped out on it. Given the alternatives, he went with it.
“Not gonna use the last one?” Rave asked when he closed the windows. “Ya got three to start with, right?”
“Yes, but I’ll keep that one for Starforger. I can get to working on the next level for that one after we get back home.” Currently, he was holding out on picking the next Starforger Perk due to the associated Opportunity Cost, which was a bunch of Room Slots. Something that, as it happened, was the reward for becoming a member of the Divided Gates.
Something he very much looked forward to.

Prayer was almost certainly the best level up option here. Even if the god[dess] in question was fully committed to helping, it seems like this would give a free bonus on top of that. Plus, as a skill, it could be subject to further evolution. And, as was noted above, given the 10 years on changes, putting anything legal there locks out changes that might be made or risks being very confusing. That said, I cannot express how trilled I am to be seeing blue boxes again!
