12 days of Wrestle Me-mas #3 - Rollerball Rocco vs Marty Jones
🕑 Added 2020-12-16 05:00:03 +0000 UTCWilliam Regal called it the best match to ever take place on British soil. BRITISH SOIL, that's what we'll be eating in 2021. Marc and Pete take a look at this classic match from 1978, starring the late Rollerball, who sadly died earlier in 2020, and the underrated Marty Jones, who happily survived the whole of 2020.

Massively appreciated Joe and Marc! I do think even if you don't give a shit about wrestling the whole phenomenon of a supressed national pastime... This part of British television history that's been so easily rewritten - it's fascinating. Nothing seems more American than watching the 'rasslin - and yet the television used to do bigger numbers than the football... Thanks for all the recommendations and links - pumped to start this journey!

You'll love the John Lister book! Here's the documentary you're probably thinking of, it doesn't seem to be on iPlayer any more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8V707FFEq0k

This match is just sensational - dipped toes into the old Brit wres before and never got hooked, not even last year with the Rocco / Dynamite Kid. Nothing I didn't like about it, but it felt of such another time I found it hard to connect. This match has 100% given me the bug. It's a match that makes you go "Ok - maybe some of the oldies have a point about their being something lacking in modern wrestling". As Pete says - there's not what you'd call any modern "high spots" here, but every single move is not just executed to perfection, but with conviction. I'm going to watch and re-watch this beauty all over Xmas and have already started scouring eBay for WOS dvds - anyone have any suggestions for shows/matches/books (got JL in my sights/or docs? I'm amazed BBC 4 has never done a WOS lookback... I SWEAR I remember seeing one on iPlayer many moons ago.
