Jesse Wood

Most likely. After all, living creatures produce ambient mana around them. In fact, Amber thought strong monsters caused the high mana in the wilds before the guard told her about mana wellsprings.

Aki Foxtail

It might be what is used in the process of respawning as well.

Carl Mason

A very good question, I would assume one of two basic options: either the mana disperses or the mana, being termed Soul Development, is retained and the soul does something. Those two options have several variations possible each, but I would assume one or the other. If it were dispersal, I would expect to see the high houses crypts be located in the wellspring area to prevent the discharge being dangerous to nearby populations.

Nikhil Kshirsagar

I had a question. What happens to the collected mana when someone dies? Does it return to the ambient surrounding somehow?

Connor Mcharg

Y'know, I hadn't even considered the possibility that they were from, or sent by, High House Tostral - partly because I'd forgotten that that gnat had called for reinforcements - but now that you mention it, I can't wait to see how spectacular a failure those reinforcements experience when they fail to notice that there's half a dozen people so powerful that they're disguising their souls, just hanging out, and possibly investigating High House Tostral themselves.

Carl Gherardi

After automater comes scheduler. At least magic deals with priority inversion

Bryan L

You pass butter

George

I'm assuming they haven't figured out the whole list yet, but either way there's no danger in making the Automator now, since it should synergize with anything else Purple might want to do.

George

Oh man, watching Purple's development, I really want to see Enchanter Tornay's reaction if he ever gets the chance to meet Purple again. He'd have an aneurism on the spot. Probably a metaphorical one, but maybe a real one. The Automator soul structure is an excellent idea and I feel silly for not predicting it. Other nobles will be so jealous of the super "enchanted" manor that handles its resident's every need. Especially if he can get controlled mana compression levels from a wellspring added to it like he seems to be thinking about. This chapter has given me a lot more to speculate about than the last few.

George

I suspect they are about to have reason to, since she just noticed the people that I'm assuming are House Tostral agents, come to take revenge and enforce the rotation agreement. Edit: or, now that I read the other comments, agents of the Crown come to investigate the rotation agreement.

Brandon C

Comprehension Aid, Debugger, Introspector, Bond Maker, now Automator. Will we be getting a list for the others? Or is it going to be a gradual reveal?

Dave W

Purple has a comprehension aid

Markell

Purple: “what is my purpose?” Carlos: “You are essentially a gas mains.” Purple: “… oh dear god”

Markell

Just wanted to add that I also love this technique: it’s a great way of providing exposition without it being a paragraph and a half of just explanation. It makes the information feel dynamic and alive and and interesting to read

Chrystal 1776

And suddenly Carlos has created his version of skunkworks for magical experimentation

Josh

> If some nobles might experiment with trying something incredibly dangerous to everyone around them, you don't mess around about making sure they're aware of the danger. Yeah, absolutely. Also, I would not be surprised if the report on Carlos to the Crown observes that he *rapidly* thinks of clever ideas to try without prompting, and those clever ideas really need some *remote* test facilities. "The Crown has decided to award Carlos Founder with an additional grant of land, for experimentation purposes, far far far far away from anyone else."

Douglas Miller

Thanks! I'm glad I thought of the idea before I'd written much of Lorvan just explaining it. It gives the new nobles (and especially Amber) a much more active role, and gives them a practical lesson at the same time as teaching them information, which works wonderfully with Lorvan's secondary role as their temporary mentor. I still ended up with Lorvan simply telling them several things, but I think that's well justified with those things being not reasonably deducible, yet also important for them to know anyway. If some nobles might experiment with trying something incredibly dangerous to everyone around them, you don't mess around about making sure they're aware of the danger.

Brandon C

Are we going to get a soul structure list for Purple? Automator and what are the others?

Melissa Harden

I guess building up to well spring levels might be enough of an excuse among noble peers in court for the time share conspirators to get a slap on the rist while the crown might see it differently or pass the buck to defending Mana lands to Carlos and Ember

Josh

> Lorvan continued walking without reaction for a few seconds before he responded. "As high nobles and the leaders of your house, you will often have to make decisions with incomplete information. Deducing things you do not already know will be an important skill for you to have. I suggest that you use this question to practice. Can you reason your way to the answer from what you already know?" I love this, both in-story and as a storytelling device.

NightKhaos

Oh that's just stabby... he protects the castle from the plague of dust mites and the occasional assassin.

13L00D13ANE

I prefer the ones with claymores strapped on top. Call em Room-Booms

13L00D13ANE

Yeah I certainly hope they pick her up.

13L00D13ANE

Oh man! Best case scenario, they catch the noble house in the act of trying to get rid of Carlos and amber. Edit: upon second reading, I think they are crown agents. I'll call your attention to the fact that this is the second set of perception wards she has seen, first being Carlos' guards. Lil noble lady was in town so it stands to reason if her guards had that ability they'd use it. I think they got beat to the punch by crown agents.

Lee Smith

Now... who could be using noticemenot? Hmm

Connor Mcharg

I bet the grin that came with Carlos's (thought/comunication) about Purple and a mana wellspring felt *amazing*.

Connor Mcharg

That's definitely a possibility, but I was thinking Lorvan and Ordens have already made their report, and some crown investigators have arrived to try and figure out who might be a part of the rotation and/or work on a fix for the soul disguises attracting Ressara's attention - either way, if they are from the Crown, they'd do well to let her know, given they should be aware that she's very aware of them.

Beeees!

Ooh, that Def makes sense. But maybe they arent spies but rather assassins?? I'm pretty sure the noble brat was excited that Carlos was gonna be eliminated

Toua77

Sounds like the other noble house is sending spies into town.

Gingiberry

“Wtf is a Room-Bah?”

SylviaTheThrid

Thank you for the chapter!

MindWright

Good to see Ressara and Purple again.

Mon

Calm before (maybe one of the next chapters will be named) Storm?

Maurice Brown

That castle is going to be terrifying. (I wonder if it’s going to have fun-sized mobile death and agony dispensers…) Edit: They’re steampunk murder cats the size of truck. Castle Heterodyne considers them “fun-sized”. https://girlgenius.fandom.com/wiki/Fun-Sized_Mobile_Agony_and_Death_Dispenser
