Hey look, the answer to my question a few minutes ago, I should have just kept reading.

Self-suffocation is rather difficult to actually take to the point of death as I understand it, especially without tools, and has the risk of getting close enough to success to cause brain damage without actually succeeding. Also, while I deliberately avoided going into lots of specifics about the anti-suicide spell, that was just to ensure I didn't accidentally miss something in an unnecessarily specific list. The spell is pretty well comprehensive for short term dangers.

Honestly, I think that Carlos gave up too quickly when he saw the anti-death spell. If the spell doesn't prevent death from thirst, then it likely doesn't prevent suffocation either, and that's something easily accomplished, even without magic. They'll probably think of this and several other solutions after they survive, and kick themselves for not having those ideas during the crisis.

Also, shout out to this prophetic comment on today's Royal Road release from Malady2. Once again the release gap between RR and Patreon lines up perfectly. "I forget if Purple can make bonds themselves, because this seems like a good time for the Mayor to show Purple to Ressara when she confirms herself as a loyal hire or something, so Purple + Ressara can work together to find Carlos and Amber."

"isn't that a house secret?" Yes, but so is having a fully sapient dungeon core with soul structures that include telepathic bonds as their friend and ally, but now you know about that too, Resara. Good chapter, interested to see if Purple or Carlos and Amber get past the wards first. My money's on Purple, but I still give those two good odds.

The sleep spell isn't on the box at all - it's a pair of limpet spells attached to the souls of Carlos and Amber (as far as the spells and their caster know)

Now that Ressara has explained it in more detail, her attention-diverter-inverter sounds like it might have something loosely in common with the idea behind anti-levitation. Not that Ressara is doing something out-of-bounds the way Carlos did, but that it changes something people don't expect to have changed: in this case, the sign of the direction variable. She's going to make a good member of House Carlos with that kind of security mindset. I wonder, if you cast an attention-diverting spell, is the amount of power being put into it a variable that can be negated? Imagine a spell that draws someone's attention to an immense degree while giving you energy. I wonder if any of the spells making up the box Carlos and Amber are in could have their directions inverted, or something else inverted, without opposing the power of the spell? Some of the spells seem to apply bidirectionally to the inside and outside of the box, but for instance, the sleep spell only applies to the inside...

Ok! Collection of random thoughts time! …I can kinda understand why Mayor Stelras went for creating a coin, but couldn't he have gone for something cheaper, like changing the colour of something? Well, the fact that High House Carlos isn't managing to keep up with the ambient mana is dissapointing but rather understandable - still, they're now two levels away from their ‘synergy unification’, whatever that does, and their introspectors don't seem to be complaining about a nearing soul overload threshold yet, so something good might happen there… Fortunately, Ressara's soul structure suggestion seems fairly close to the kind of thing that Carlos would suggest for his smart acadamy soul plan, so it might be just fine anyway. …I kind of hope Ressara checks with Carlos before trying out this new ‘manager-of-my-soul’ structure idea - I feel like the description Purple gave isn't quite complete enough to make a fully functional one, though she'd probably be able to make a pretty solid structure from that description (but I'm not sure if she'll spot that it should be able to alter itself).
