Seconding this! Definitely on brand to make friends with guardian instead of kill it. It would be great fun to have this giant creature napping around purple all the time, keeping an eye on everyone nearby, like a dog chilling with its Hooman.

Point the Vicious Mockery at the enemy, may the jokes live on

"His mana is so peaceful with him sleeping, and it's nice how he seems to project reassurance toward me even in his sleep." and "Carlos's mana gently grasped the tendril Amber had pushed him with and held it for a moment" Aaawwww. Very much rooting for them as a romantic couple now. Also, is using mana that intuitively a normal mage thing, a special House Carlos mage thing, or a side effect of their implanted knowledge of how dungeons use mana?

Nate W

I'm pretty sure they've been regularly training with Trinlen, and getting pointers from their royal guards and maybe even Felton.

Ben Bass

TYFTC! Very interesting to see that they are getting close enough to the limits of the Royal Guards. Now, Carlos needs to level and also learn how to use all of his skills while dueling/fighting, as that will become more necessary. Also, what else can they bring to aid the Crown, as things are starting to get a little wobbly there....

Jouni Osmala

Sounds like Carlos would need to give the crown any edge he could provide quickly. Carlos seems to be in a position where if the crown looses so does Carlos. Maybe giving some secrets with promise of future compensation from crown later when correct authority has dealt with immediate issues and promises of keeping those secrets within limited number of high-level crown servants. And details about purple with Felton only, so that Carlos could push details directly to Felton, and give him direct access to a limited knowledge base of what's to be shared with crown. Maybe Purple could act as a respawn achor for the enemies that put the enemies in a vulnerable positions where they could be killed again and again. Basically eliminating a significant portion of the rebellion permanently in a single fight. It's curious how these battles would really advance when people respawn upon death. Loosing a single level could loose lot's of advancement and equipment, but it doesn't really stop any fight permanently.

I have a theory about why some mana wells are higher level than others. The source of all mana is likely at the center of the planet, probably level 255 if it's an 8-bit system. As that mana expands through cracks, caves, and underground tunnels, it decompresses to lower levels. By the time it reaches the surface and forms a mana well, it's significantly weaker than the original source. The level of a mana well depends on how direct or winding the path is from the core. A straight, narrow route decompresses less, resulting in a higher-level well. A long, convoluted path allows the mana to spread and decompress more, leading to lower-level output at the surface. If someone were to descend into a mana well, they would be able to reach progressively higher level mana as they delve deeper. This would come with stranger, stronger, higher level dangers. There might be ancient dungeons, or even massive burrowing worms responsible for forming mana wells in the first place. Tectonic activity or earthquakes might create new mana wells by opening fresh channels to the core. They could also shift existing wells, lowering their level if mana diverts into new branches, or raising it if a more direct connection is suddenly formed. The planet likely doesn't have any tectonic or volcanic activity though, so this probably never happens.

I wonder if it would be possible to tame the wellspring guardian instead of killing it. Show just how powerful Carlos and Amber have become by having them overpower it into submission and have it agree to become Purple's core guardian. Even better if its sentient (dragon?) and we can design a dedicated soul plan for it, as soul plans are one of the most interesting aspects of this story that still have much more room to explore.

$20 says that item is the thing that will destroy the royal guards' armor

M

Pretty sure it's about the sabotaged armor, yes. I wanna see the look on Tostral's face if he gets notice that his benefactors' new trick failed horribly. :)

Carl Gherardi

Or. The crown knows the level of this and all wellsprings, leaving dispersion patterns as a known based on volume and estimated consumption. I do think it tells us that the crown have solved the wellspring isolation issue and maybe the level of the guards soul plan. Also possibly that monsters level differently.

Ash

Noo, I like the joke battle cry, it's awesome!

Sheriff

Oh? What is Amber considering “indulging” herself in? 😳👀😏🥰 Is romance [finally] about to bloom in earnest?! 🚢

This kingdom may be Russia- or Achaemenid Empire-sized, and similarly an outlier compared to most other countries in that world.

Tryptic

I think you may be falling into a writer's trap of making things too big. Unless this is a cultivator-style, MASSIVE continent in a massive world, the numbers in miles that you mention are a bit problematic. At one point I think you mentioned them traveling 25 miles to get to the next level aether, but I could be remembering that wrong or have misunderstood. Still though, 30 miles is probably too big of a distance for Lorvan to call "near the wellspring." They have traveled up 43 levels, and the length of California is roughly 800 miles. If the average level-step was 10 miles, they have now traveled 430 miles from the edge of their new territory to the center, so if you include the land where aether is decreasing on the other side, Relative to the kingdom, Carlos's territory will extend outward farther than California extends perpendicular to America. If the average level-step is only three miles, the territory he's looking at will be roughly the size of Ireland. And it's supposed to be the case that EVERY new noble house carves out a chunk about this size. And that's not considering whether any noble houses have multiple wellsprings, or their relative dispersal. And it sounds like the kingdom doesn't border many oceans, or at least it's got wildlands on a significant portion of its border. So unless this world is much bigger than Earth, you should be looking at maybe one mile per level-step as aether flows away from a wellspring.

Connor Mcharg

Soooo… Based on Lorvan’s assessment (and specifically the fact that he estimated distance to the wellspring based on the width of the æther bands, not the level of the bands), it does seem that not all wellsprings have the same level, but do have the same falloff, regardless of level (which is odd, and suggests that the wellsprings have some effect on the æther beyond just producing it). Also, the fact that the royal guards provided to new noble families without backing of their own aren’t of the level of a wellspring is interesting, and makes me wonder if such an assignment might come with promotions at the end to reflect their new power…

Lilith Konoha

Interesting thought - Purple could probably create subterranean routes and stealth creatures for true ambush tactics, overwhelming an enemy from a direction they won't expect in an instant

John Vistica

Great critique by Major Ordens of the battle. Agree that Jamar had to go as she would be insanely annoying to have around unless Mage Felton shipped her off to prison instead. I wonder if the guards can guide Purple to mode the Pegasus team while they spar...they can test what works and what doesn't for creating the best heavy hitter. Did Lord Tostral just get handed the Royal Guard sabotage controller? We've yet to see the extent of the suit sabotage in a battle situation.

Maurice Brown

Ah so Jamar had a “Welcome back Yamucha.” Moment.
