Because men so often are "up to something". And, in a way, Clinton is. Not up to anything violent or aggressive, as Renee fears. But the possibility of eventually stirring romantic interest from Brun has occurred to him. I think that relates to his turning down Claire's offer to accompany him, don't you?

I had found out how to do this out some time ago. Even better, I figured out how to get them to not taper.

I guess I don't get something. He is just being nice to someone that has had a really disastrous day. One that he actually witnessed and took part in. Why the automatic assumption on people's part that he must be up to something?
