Yep, it's like the joke "Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read". The beat panel while Claire processes the joke really sells it.

Normally I feel pretty proficient at English, but jokes like these are tough on a non-native speaker. Anyone care to assist with all but the first?
