My family has a Christmas Eve tradition of having pizza for dinner. It started in the 1960s when my mom was so busy preparing the Christmas Day meals, she didn’t have time to cook anything for Christmas Eve, so my dad started picking up pizzas from a local tavern that made excellent pizzas. I’ve had pizza on every Christmas Eve since for 50 years (except when I was in basic training over the holidays). I’ve had pizza with family, with friends, and by myself. I’ve had pizza in nice sit down restaurants, sometimes delivery, a few times I was so poor all I could afford was a Totino’s frozen pizza. Once I had to settle for a slice of dried out pizza from a 7-11. I’ve had Christmas Eve pizza on three continents. For a few years my late brother got the pizzas from a tavern in his neighborhood. This year, my sister chose the pizza and I picked it up from Papa Murphy’s (not the evil bastard Papa John) and we baked it at home. But I never miss out. It’s family tradition.
