From the next strip, you called it.
Wolfgang Sabado
This was foreshadowed on the Aug 1 strip brilliantly. One of my favorite things about QC is that there's rarely drama for drama's sake; and I truly hope this doesn't go too poorly.
Laura-Kathleen Redman
Dang, that's the hand she uses to do sprays aaaaand she has an appointment later.
oh man im glad im not the only one
*sigh* Raises hand. Me. Brought back memories of a band saw. (don't ask. Just do NOT ask.)

I’m terrified of a liability lawsuit and subsequent Faybles squabble over the inevitable rough patch. At the same time, I feel like there’s a chance she’ll be fine, and her dad will be pissed but understanding, and the arc will end with a “# days since our last accident” sign being posted with a chuckle.

Did anyone else cringe and immediately touch their own fingernail? .... no? Just me?
Richard
It's not only kids do this. https://www.reddit.com/r/instant_regret/comments/2aarg3/adam_savage_sticks_his_lip_into_a_vacuum_cleaner/

By the looks of it, she tore her nail to the point of bleeding, which hurts like a mug, but there wont be any permanent damage. Considering how banged up Sam often gets on her usual outings, Jim will probably just sigh, ask her what she learned from this, and ground her for the foreseeable future. And possibly pull Sam out of whatever program at school that lets her make her own hours.
I know why? - Who enjoys filing their fingernails after clipping them to get all those burrs off? No Body! If I only had a ... oh, wait, wait ... I wonder if this thing could do it really fast ... let's see if I hold it this way ... and it is spinning that way ...
Churchill (formerly TeaBear)
Aw, Shit... looks like spurting :O
Lucanid Landman
Moral of the story: Never leave an untraoned person operating a power tool on their own. The correct thing to do in this instance would have been to tell Sam to put it down and step away until she could return to supervise.
There's a weird thing where I'm way more likely to hurt myself with a dremel than more serious tools, because hey it's just a dremel--ow, shit

Thankfully my parents were type B. 90% of my injuries got a "Well that was a silly thing to do, wasn't it?" speech, not a "How DARE you, adult at the scene, let my angel get hurt like this!"
David R Long
Sometimes I wonder, "What would happen if I bumped my shoulder against the subway as it's coming into the station?"
Greg Morrow
There are two kinds of parents: I will sue you for letting my child be endangered, and glad it wasn't worse, what did you learn.
Gary Walker
Next time, wacky fun ensues and Marten learns about degloving injuries.
Cody Renton
In fairness to Sam I would 100% do the same thing eventually
Philip D Jones
When I was young I worked in a furniture factory. There were MASSIVE bandsaws. The operators like to trim their nails with them. We knew this because of the blood trail to the bathroom.
Rudolph Gerber
This is when Bubbles' knowledge of first aid comes to the fore and saves the day. She served with humans and will have the needed knowledge. Seriously: hire veterans. They know stuff cos they've seen stuff.
If there is to be stress between Bubbles and Faye as a result of them being co workers, this is where it may well begin. I'm awaiting tomorrows page with interest...
In part it depends on the severity of the wound, I would guess. But yeah, parental response will be coming in.
Ben Russell-Gough
I can't see this ending well for Faye. She committed the single unforgivable sin here - leaving a novice unattended, even for a moment. Jim will go ballistic and, likely, so will his as-of-yet-unseen ex-wife. Lawsuits COULD happen. I suspect that today will be the last day of Sam's freedom as she has known it to date. She's going to be very closely supervised from now on. No more 'hanging out' at Union Robotics, looking for snakes in the woods and the like!
SC
Kids, amirite?
Kinda Squirrely
Unfortunately, this now counts as her in more than one piece if that fingernail isn't still attached.
Ben Russell-Gough
Faye, welcome to the wonderful world of the instinctive human reaction to fast-moving objects. This is in no way isolated to children. Fully-grown adults who are 100% aware of what the devices do and how dangerous they are can also be auto-hypnotised into doing just what Sam did. Fortunately, the damage doesn't seem so bad. However, I doubt that Sam will be allowed to visit Union Robotics again any time soon!
As did most of us. (Obvious Jeph is, after all, obvious. :) )

This is the first QC comic to ever make me queasy. Visceral recall of a shredded fingertip with the nail ripped away. Eleven stitches. Everything grew back OK, but decades later the fingertip is still numb. Yes, lathes are worse.
My nemesis was a band saw. That thing terrified me, and I treated it with respect and operated it with care. The injury? I cut my hand replacing the blade. In my defense, the machine was off and I had it unplugged, tagged and locked. The blade just bit me when I was putting it in place. It trucking BIT me! That was the ONLY time I shed blood in that job.
Not sure... Lets take a look at a previous page featuring Sam and Bubbles... https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3594

I. Sigh I saw this coming.

In a robot repair shop most first aid requires welding.... will that work here? :)
awgiedawgie
Triage is the process for determining which patients have medical priority. There is only one patient here, so there is no need for determining priority. What Sam requires is basic First Aid.
Brent Catherman
I don't think Jim will react badly to this. She's taking fencing lessons so he knows what his daughter is into and they called him ahead of time. Hopefully, Bubbles knows something about triage.
Bruce Steinberg
Or a table saw. Those will take off bits of fingers real quick.
Am Queue
Faye promised to send her home with all her fingers, still attached. That matters.
Ian Wolfe
Child rearing in a nutshell.
awgiedawgie
Everybody does that with a power tool at least once in their life. If they're smart, just once.
Jeff Hartley
Well, at least her finger is still attached.
Damian Paradis
Obviously this would have worked better if she clamped her finger in the vice first.... wait...no.....hrm... Seriously though the logic disconnect of just being yelled at is awesome, and true to life.
Operation Brownie Pockets is a free game you play in real life
This is me every time my parents asked why I did something. I could never understand why “I have no idea, it just seemed like a good idea” wasn’t a satisfactory answer.
I love anybody who uses a reference from Sir pTerry. (Double points for it being Death. (HO HO HO.)
A sheep
YEAH THERE'S THE DRAMA
Summer Sudbrink
Oh also, she touched her fingernail to it to see if she could quickly file it down. Not uh, not that I’ve tried anything like that myself. It does work thoguh, but you must use a VERY light touch and not mind the smell of smoldering fingernail. Extra also, Smoldering Fingernail would be a good band name.
Gary Walker
If you must learn this lesson the hard way, better to learn it with a Dremel than a lathe.
Summer Sudbrink
“You can't give her that!' she screamed. 'It's not safe!' IT'S A SWORD, said the Hogfather. THEY'RE NOT MEANT TO BE SAFE. 'She's a child!' shouted Crumley. IT'S EDUCATIONAL. 'What if she cuts herself?' THAT WILL BE AN IMPORTANT LESSON.”
Bob Ellis
I can believe a human and an AI can run a robot repair shop. I can believe they’re involved with each other. I can just believe a world where this is accepted. I have real trouble believing they have an insurance policy that covers a minor using power tools unsupervised. This may be where they get shut down. Praise be they rang her dad earlier. It may not help but it can’t hurt.
Morgan McCauley
This is how we learn. XD
TMN
Sam's obsession with powers meant this was bound to happen sooner or later. She's not the indestructible little girl she used to be.
I hope Jim doesn't react badly to this.

For my second Christmas, my mom gave me an extension cord. I could do whatever I wanted with it as long as I only ever plugged it into itself. By then I had learned how to remove the plastic outlet safety covers.
Grace Kieser
I'd be mad at Sam, but I did that with a CPU fan and shaved off a portion of my index finger. I don't know why I did it, either!
Holly Nelson
Reminds me of the time I trailed my fingers gently along the vanes of a turning squirrel cage fan. Yeah... ten seconds ago... still got all my fingers and my nails however.
Denise Webber
I'm surprised it was a whole ten seconds. Kids do stupid things, that's how they learn not to do stupid things again.
darklion
I once put a scissors into an electrical outlet. I mean, I was 3, but people do dumb stuff and then learn not to do dumb stuff because dumb stuff hurts.
Joseph Houk
Ten seconds. She couldn't last more than TEN SECONDS.
Lord Crusade
Seriously Sam, seriously?
gatherer818
....I got first comment entirely by accident. Huh.

Owwwww
