Pop quiz - lips or no lips? On re-reading the Faybles arc, I noticed Jeph stopped drawing lips (again!) about 100 strips ago. I like the characters without - like Murphy-Veigelt says, the eyes have it.

Yes. Everything considered, she is holding up exceptionally good. Given her insecurities with close people leaving (dad), moving on (Marten), betraying (Sven), just being "not the one" (Angus) and uncomfortably changing with time (Dora), she's handling the situation much better than she could have been.

It doesn't help that she didn't really HAVE a relationship with Sven and that Angus actively tried to avoid these questions through humour (probably feeling no more at ease with them than Faye did).

You guys, I have to share this because I think you'll understand. Today my wife sent me this text. There's a spiderling on my phone. And I teared up thinking of how she's actually picked up some of my love of spiders through osmosis, and of how much I love her. And I know that Bubbles and Faye are the reason I teared up, because I've been tearing up every goddamn time I look at this strip or even think about it, especially this exchange: "Is that why you checked for my armor?" "I-I was scared you left. I knew you wouldn't go anywhere without it." My wife and I have experienced loss during the last three or four years that has broken my heart. I've been numb and sad. And a big part of why the story of Bubbles and Faye has me tearing up is that it resonates with our relationship. This comic strip has gotten through some of my sadness and numbness and helped me remember how much I love her and why I fell in love with her in the first place. We were, and continue to be, what the other needed. And she knows I'm not going anywhere. And I know I don't need my armor with her. Goddamn, I've never felt this way about a piece of art before. I feel like this is my chick flick, you know?

The way Bubbles holds her arms in front of her certainly works to keep the comic PG-13, but it also has the advantage of making her look like she's trying to make herself look smaller and less intimidating, both physically and emotionally. Making herself less scary is exactly the response I would expect her to give to Faye's "this is scary."

I'm savoring the through of a strip with just Marten and Bubbles hanging out on the couch. Bubbles looks thoughtful, turns to him and delivers a monologue about how she's sorry she started their relationship by physically intimidating/assaulting him, and ending with her appreciation and awareness that, without his love and support, Faye wouldn't have been capable of entering into their relationship. And they hug, and Marten is totally unafraid.

Meanwhile, Steve has been crushed under a mountain of empty Horsey-O's boxes. His mangled body waits for Martin to discover it. His coffin will be a giant cereal bowl, with a spoon as a headstone.

I mean I doubt that they were having crazy passionate makeouts, got naked, then googled "human woman robot woman sex how" .. although now that I think of it, all the awkward fails and consequential giggles would be amusing to watch.

I am feeling weirdly conflicted about this comic.... In one hand, plot progression, and more Faybles! But on the other hand, I was a little disappointed when I opened up the comic after seeing the title and not seeing Steve eat cereal... Jeph, how you're dealing with this in a way that in no way follows past progressions is messing with me! I don't know how to feel about things that I've been waiting to see for gods knows how long now!!!!
