I would have sat on the other side of the couch (if I were a right handed coffee drinker) if I were going to use the arm. On the cushion is always always a bad idea. Floor could work, no kids to kick it over. Sara took the coffee table.

I don't know about you, but I could (and have) set a coffee cup on the arm of the couch... or on the cushion next to me... or on the floor. Plus there's a table at the other end of the couch that he could reach with very little effort (they also had a coffee table the day they moved into the apartment, but I don't recall seeing it since then).
