A theory: At some point, Jeph began unconsciously basing most new characters on dogs he meets while walking his dog. This now accounts for a large part of the strip's appeal.

Wouldn’t be a bad idea to go elsewhere for a while. I’m acquainted with a woman whom lost her husband to cancer and decided to just move to South Korea at the beginning of this year. I could see how Roko could have as close to an AI experience death and every depression that comes with survival. Travel can be very good medicine.

During one of my deepest bouts of depression, I found myself essentially disassociated. I couldn't move, and I couldn't speak. My then-pa spent 20 or 30 minutes trying to find a way to reach me, and I just couldn't reach back out. Then she put a pair of my boxer shorts on my head. I chuckled, then laughed, and it was enough to get me out of that loop, at least for a little while. I'm glad to I know that, at least on some level, I share that kind of experience with others.
