But Roko isn't an incompetent cop. She feels that way now because she had a big case that she couldn't solve on her own. Plus that case hits home a bit more now that she has gotten to know the good people that were being taken advantage of in it. But she's also inexperienced. With a few more years under her belt, she'd realize that she was simply in over her head, and <i>no</i> cop could have solved that one on their own. If she were ever in a similar situation again, she would know enough to get more people on the case.

"Making a dumb impulsive decision *also* feels like that" is straight-up profound and kind of horrifying. A lot of the time we make huge decisions based on intuitions that they are the right thing to do, and sometimes those intuitions are wrong. Sometimes they are just really wanting to do that thing. Still, quitting a job you are bad at is not nearly so dicey as bank fraud. I kind of like cops. There have been a couple of times I was really happy to see them show up. But no one needs an incompetent cop. Better she should find a job she can do.
