I love how supportive Claire's mom is, however, that first panel hit me right in the dysphoria feels...("Little girl" miiight be what i've wanted to hear my mom say to me my entire life...i'm kinda 23yrs old and 6'2"...I don't expect that I'm ever going to hear it)

Claire's Mom is how parents seem to their (even adult) kids. We have necessary blind spots all over our parents. Veronica is more 3D, but still acts as a moving background. Her "She's being brave, you twit!" was a sudden sign of reality. I hope we see more of the person and not just her resumé. Similarly, Claire's Mom may get a first name (does she and I missed it?). We may see echoes of her marriage. She might even get upset about something. Or... we could see how Faye and Bubbles are negotiating their very difficult personal lives. (I want Truman Show level coverage of Faybles .... I suspect that this is unhealthy.)

Hmmph. Saintly Madonna, wholly fulfilled by motherhood? I've never seen one of those. In my personal and vicarious experience, parenthood widens and deepens anxiety to the exact degree to which it does joy. It is like having your heart outside your body wandering around having adventures and getting hurt. It makes you more, not better. It is one more thing you have to manage. I wonder how she manages.

It's simple: Her blessings (Claire and Clinton) are enough to raise her above her trials and troubles. She also has Chad, of course, who I suspect has taken twenty years off of her age!

I wonder what is going on inside this mother. By all accounts she has seen some shit, and she bears no apparent scars. That is uncommon. It is apparent how her children manage fear and anxiety. How does she, I wonder? Marijuana and cute young sweeties won't do it all.

Damn you, Jeph! How am I meant to maintain my callous, cynical exterior when you draw panels like panel 4? Seriously, I'm wondering now if we're going to have something really compromising happen because all emotional limits are off. You know the sort of thing that you are never sure if it really happened and you're afraid to ask because you rather are hoping that it was just a hallucination whilst under the influence.
