I actually think you are more or less on the money there. Though I'd make the comparison with a college-age kid, not a teenager. Not experienced, with insecurities, but quite able to comprehend what's going on and to take responsibility for it.

It's easy to forget sometimes, but May is still an insecure teenager beneath all that rough exterior. When she need to be an adult with other people she does it easily (although reluctantly), but in her own life she is still vulnerable and over-sensitive. Realistically her roommate should be totally cool with her private life, but she somehow made a problem out of it. If she were human, it could be easily attributed to being abandoned / put into the position of adult too early, but being an AI her psychological processes must be even more interesting.

In fact, it's alternate-reality 2019 with sentient robots. They've probably got something beyond our primitive texting technology. Emoji-bots or something.
