The Boston accent, along with the New York and New Jersey accents, are direct descendants of the original English accent, which had a non-rhotic R. At some point in England's history after the establishment of the American Colonies and their subsequent insurrection (we call it a revolution but it wasn't really one as we didn't overthrow the English monarch) the fashion changed for speaking with a rhotic R, but as interchange between the cultures was limited as there was no recorded media and travel was difficult, the American accents of the time did not adopt this fashion and so these accents remain closest to what they were at the time of the breakaway of the Colonies.

I used to work with a Kenyan chap who was educated in England, he had a British-sounding accent with the lovely, lilting musical quality common to African accents. But when he got angry, all trace of Britishness left it and all that remains was an enraged Masai warrior. I will never forget the time I walked into the back room to hear him chewing out our Indian colleague who had forgotten how to do his job for the umpteenth time or poached a customer from another salesman or some other thing that he did.

Also, Boston is a real city, and so home to some very upper-crust people and some real low-lifes. They share the accent, but the upper-crust people get out in the big world and lose most of it most of the time. Having someone drop suddenly back into a Boston accent is a sudden reminder that they come from somewhere packed, teeming, and grimy. That's a recommendation, truth to tell, but it is like suddenly getting a glimpse through someone's clothes.

There's cop thing, but also there's a more generalized " accent that she disguises but that gives her away when she loses her temper" thing. Happens in the UK too. Lauren Lucille doesn't always give in to her Sunderland accent but when she does, WHOO.

I think part of it is that nearly everybody in America is firmly convinced that *they* and their area have no accent, so hearing strong accents from other regions in America seems very funny. Try to convince someone from California or the Midwest that they have an accent, and you get genuine shock and disbelief.

Does May need help? Yes. Starting with accepting the fact that het current circumstances, body and all, are the results of her own poor choices. Don't forget she was in jail because she was trying to steal money for an aircraft body. Yes, she did the time for the crime, but she still has earn back a bit of society's trust and trying to play the victim does not help her case.
