Actually I think Marten has met one. "old Gus" who he thought was the janitor, was in fact one of the librarians.

You almost always need a subject masters to be an academic reference librarian. Claire might have one, but it hasn't been mentioned. She could maybe catalog, run acquisitions, or manage interlibrary loan, though. Or, if she is geeky in that way, she could be an electronic services librarian, and take care of the online catalog, the various databases, any digital archives they might have, the library web site, and so on.

Pretty sure Marten and Claire have only been dating for like months or something. It's worth asking himself why it's a problem if he's unwilling to commit, at this point in the relationship. They've both been very good for eachother but "pack your bags and move to a new city" is still a level of commitment people often don't reach within say three months time, and there's no shame or disrespect in that. Does the thought concern him because he wants to be more committed to this relationship than that? Because he feels obligated to express a certain level of commitment? Does he think he owes her more than he's given her? No wrong answer, but figuring out exactly what he's hoping to achieve here will help him to figure out how to move forward.

So Marten is worried that his concerns about leaving his life in Northampton behind means he's not as ready to commit as Tai and Dora. But I think the fact that he's worried about THAT (rather than the prospect of Claire leaving and ending the relationship) means that he's more committed to the relationship than he thinks he is. He's freaking out only because he hasn't considered it before now and leaving Northampton is a real possibility.
