For my part, I wouldn't see it as a violation of trust -- even in Elliot's shoes. Clinton didn't ask if Brun was attracted to Elliot or not. It's Elliot's handling of the situation that led Brun to connecting dots, etc. I am with Elliot wrt the bit about "am I a backup plan" or not though. That being said, I think there's an argument to be made that the mutual attraction to Elliot (+alcohol) gave him the confidence to ask. I can see lots of potential for story and character (and relationship, hopefully) development.
